    enfield markings

ok i got this enfield about a month ago. and i m having trouble with the markings. i cant seem to find them anywhere online. im trying to find out what they mean and if they are proper or not. its not the greatest enfield but it has the bayonet with it also. it has some rust and pitting. the barrel seems pretty decent on the rifleing but its dull. i dont know how its supposed to look and dont know much about enfield. the magazine is also a savage magazine but is not pictured.

where did you buy it, from the look of it it compares to the big 5 Savage Lee Enfields they were/are selling.

Going by the receiver, I don't think it's a Savage, but I can't see the pic of the receiver close enough.

doesn't look simplified. It has a button for the bolt release, not a lame rail cut

yeah I got it at big 5. I had been wanting one. I heard they were plentiful and cheap but this is the only one I had ever seen at any place they had sold guns. I'm trying to collect all the allies battle rifles. looking to get an m1 carbine in the future. but I'd like to see what I could probably sell this for minimum.

              Re: Enfield markings

              steelrain82,
With my old eyes I am not quite sure, but it looks like a Maltby, made in 1942, serial AB (or is it AE) 13161. I want to believe that the serial number is the same on the bolt. It is very much an Enfield that went to Turkey after WWII. Big 5's Enfields seem to be all from Turkey.

Might have a two groove barrel, but then again it might have 4 or more grooves. You can clean them up nicely and this rifle is a perfect representative of the British WWII infantry rifle.

              Good luck with the collection.

its ae 13161 and it does match the bolt. the gun actually looks alot better in person than in the pics. i believe its 4 grooves. is the barrel suppossed to be shiny or dull looking?

                    Re: Enfield

                    steelrain82,
The bore would have been shiney when it was made, but 67 years can dull a bore. Clean it, shoot it, clean it, shoot it....it might come back to shiney. It may never be a shiney as new. It depends a lot on how it was treated in the last 67 years. If it is accurate, who cares about shiney?

Looks like a standard war time No4 Mk1 made in Great Britain. I can't tell from the photos if it is a B.S.A. , Maltby or Fazakerley made rifle.

This is what it looked like when it was new.
