Uberti (1858) Remington New Model Army

Santa left an early Christmas present in my underwear drawer, a Remington 1858 revolver with Taylor's 45 Colt Conversion Cylinder! Took it to the Firing Line in Huntington Beach, fit & finish, cylinder timing, and accuracy are all outstanding. While I have modern reloading equipment, I picked up a Lyman 310 Tool with 45 Colt dies to reload for this beast which only seamed appropriate. I also picked up a 'paper cartridge kit" from Guns of the West to try my hand at black powder. As a side note this is the same revolver Clint Eastwood carried in Pale Rider.

I have some of the paper cartridge kits.
I enjoy them. They do come in handy at times.

    Congrats on the gun

I was concerned about the availability of 'black powder' powder components too and ordered a supply of RWS 1075 caps, Pyrodex P, and 777 from from Powder Valley before Santa dropped off my new revolver.

Wild Weasel, is that a Uberti or Pietta made gun? I have the Uberti made gun (the grips are trimmer on the Uberti). Uberti also hides the printing under the rammer where you can't see the Black Powder Only warning. Midway sells both brands.

It's a black powder revolver. Why not order the real thing?

Black powder is easily found if you order it online. The trick is to buy a few pounds, that way you spread the hazmat out a bit, and those few pounds will last you quite some time.

When loading for the conversion cylinder, look for some cowboy load data, use soft lead bullets, and keep your velocities at no greater than 800 FPS and you should be fine.

Yes, the RWS (Germany) 1075 work on all my revolvers and rifles that take #11 including my Uberti Rem 58. It is in stock. (It's long been my favorite all around #11 cap for years).

The 1075+ are magnum and more likely to blow the cap apart and fall down into the pistols from time to time. But it's super good for rifles using replacement powders that are harder to ignite (but the plus version is out of stock right now).

My best for revolvers Rem #10. Best for rifles RWS 1075. But either of those two will work on any gun I have. The other sizes and brands seem to not work well on some revolvers.

I've been reloading 45 Colt with a vintage 310 tool w/45 Colts dies. Lyman 45 Colt dies come with a .454 neck expander which I replaced with the.452 neck expander from my 310 45 ACP die set. Presently looking for a Lyman 310 #14 priming die for 45 Auto Rim to round out my 45 lineup. Unique is my powder of choice, but have 5477 on the shelf I want to try too.
