Lol. I reused the bullets and the powder, and it shot great.
I don't do steel cases, and I don't do corrosive. And I try to avoid Milsurp in general.
And just for you......I used oven cleaner to strip the stock.

No more calls, we have a winner...... sort of. I took the mount off to re-mount and the "243" was there, but not the "S/". However - I did get the year wrong, it is 1938 and not 1939 as I previously posted.Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Now I want all stories, books, movies and TV shows to start off with...
"Minding my own business at a local gun show, I came across a... "
And eventually end happily with...
"...Still, for $200 out the door, it should be a decent hunting rig. "

But seriously, you did a great job (finding something and bringing it back to something so much better than where it was) and thank you for sharing it with us.
Maybe even some more photos with your range review?Comment

Rain and blustery wind precluded a trip to the range today. I'll be sure to take pictures as I get this thing squared away.. I don't really need another hunting rifle and I'm not sure why I bought it and what I'm gonna do with it eventually.
But, I saw a forlorn orphan that was kicked to the curb and languishng. I had to do something.

Try flipping that front mount around, so the ring sits on the rear, it'll give ya more eye relief adjustment too. Then while the scope is off, center the turrets. Will do. I took it out today to zero the scope, but did not have enough elevation.
Lay a mirror on a table, set the objective lens on the mirror with just enough gap for light, it doesn't take much, too much and you won't see what you need to. Turn the turrets until you only see one solid crosshair.Comment

Yeah - that's why I took the scope and mount off, that was my thought, too. The problem is that the screw holes aren't centered, so when I flip the mount around it hangs out over the receiver lip. I'm going to go with shimming the rear and see if I can get elevation that way.
That's a neat trick, never knew that. If the scope has click adjustments, I usually go to one end, count the clicks to the other end, and then come halfway back.If it is friction, I count turns lock to lock and then come halfway back. Then while the scope is off, center the turrets. Lay a mirror on a table, set the objective lens on the mirror with just enough gap for light, it doesn't take much, too much and you won't see what you need to. Turn the turrets until you only see one solid crosshair.
Your way sounds much easier!Last edited by bigbossman; 11-19-2023, 8:22 PM.Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

You need a crew

I can do more pics the next time out, but here's the preliminary range report for those interested. Keep in mind this rifle still has the crappy military two stage trigger, and is not bedded - although I did hog out the barrel channel to free-float the barrel. Bottom line is, it's shooter. Despite some worn looking lands, it will shoot into roughly 1" at 100 yards depending on the load/bullet.
I had two bullets on-hand (besides the pulled Romanian FMJ's) and a few powders to test with. The bullets are a 175gr Sierra PSP and a Hornady jacketed lead round nose. I used H4895, H4350, and W748 as my test powder. After shooting a group with the Romanian FMJ to warm up, I fired test groups from a benched rest at 100 yards. The Hornandy RN grouped the best with H4895, but POI was lower than the other pairings. I'll try it with other powders to see how it does.
The Sierra 175gr bullet shows a lot of promise, especially with the W748. It's already at pretty much 1MOA, so good enough for hunting.
Below are pictures of the results.
First, the Romanian FMJ, loaded into a commercial case using the pulled Romanian powder:

Then the test loads, using various powder with the two bullets I have on-hand:
