    Enfield's

Nothing earth shattering here, just a small selection of the red-headed stepchild of WWI era US made rifles. Up until recently, the Pattern 14 and US Model 1917, always seemed to be an afterthought when collecting either British or US military rifles. I have to admit that, while not actually uninterested in them, I more or less put them on the back burner for the last 50 years.

There are, of course other US made rifles from that same time period made under contract for both the Russian government, like Mosin-Nagant M91's and Winchester M1895 rifles along with French contract 1907/15 Berthier's. They are beyond the scope of this post however.

In one way I am glad that they are finally getting the recognition they deserve and in another way I am sad to see them slipping out of the reach of new collectors as an inexpensive way to add to a collection.

It seems that nowadays, they have seen a resurgence of interest amongst collectors and/or those who merely desire an example of a surplus British or American rifle. I remember when I could buy very nice original examples for well under $200 all day when 1903 Springfields were $300+.

I need to get an Eddystone built M1917 to complete the US set and I still need both an Eddystone P14 and Winchester P14's to finish the British rifle set. I see good ones listed on Gunbroker for prices in excess of $900 and usually they are listed in the $1200 range.

I am good at playing the long game though and I am willing to hold out for what I want at a price that doesn't make me choke.

Anyway, here is the rather small collection of what I have been able to amass so far. The Winchester M1917 I have had for over a dozen years and the Remington P14 for about half that. the Remington M1917 was a recent purchase.

    Top to bottom:
    Remington P14
    Remington M1917
    Winchester M1917

    Remington P14

    Remington M1917

    Winchester M1917

Nice bunch of iron, great pictures h. I too couldn't afford the "real" milsurp stuff for most of my life. But like you I was in it for the long game, picking up furniture and sport jobs that could be saved as they popped up between SKS & Mosin cheapies. I finally found an Eddystone sporter for wood I've been sitting on for 10 Years, a 03-A3 chop job that I used the receiver for a Santa Fe rescue and a #4 MK1/2 that needed a forearm. It's kinda too late in the game for serious collecting these days. PAX

I've got a really nice all matching No1MkV that I sometimes think about selling since I likely won't ever shoot it and don't have an Enfield collection (besides a couple of 1917s). Never shot it, just fondled and researched and looked at it.

Maybe I should buy some others so I have a collection.

Everything seems headed north of 1k.

I pity the new collector who doesn't have an income of 150k, etc. Lots of new money out there buying things up.

Hell, they are paying 2k for a Lebel......A LEBEL.......

Seems like a nice collection of those already OP.

I too have put the P14/17 rifles on the back burner of my collection. I don?t have one yet and have been waiting until I find a cheap one as I haven?t been that interested. But I should get one just to fill that gap in my collection. I?ve got every other US rifle back to the 1873 Trapdoor.

I believe that a US martial collection isn't complete without a M1917. After all, more were carried by US troops in France in WWI than M1903's.

Pretty much any shooting sports related purchases require a really good income with the price of guns, ammo, DROS, excise taxes, et al.

Shooting used to be for the average blue collar Joe

I added a Pattern 14 and 17 to my British collection as well. The Pattern 17 interested me due to the 30.06 chambering. And the Pattern 14 I finally purchased had the volley sights still installed.

My two below. The Pattern 17 has "30.06" in red paint on the forearm. When that was painted on I have no idea. The Pattern 14 with the front volley elevation gage and rear volley peep sight raised up.

Nice rifles. I have been sporadically looking for the front volley sight for my P14 for a few years now. I am sure I have missed more than one on ebay, but I am not diligent enough to put a saved search in for one.

Technically, the US rifle is a Model 1917, not a Pattern 17. The red paint was to positively differentiate it from a P14 as at fist glance they are identical but of course they are chambered in a totally different caliber.
