I recall about a decade or so ago, the guys on the Mauser forums were talking about how some Yugo 8mm seemed to have slightly deeper recessed primers and that they needed stronger firing pin springs or even longer firing pins - for reliable ignition - for their K98Ks.

Of course, I am old and my memory is suspect.

PPU AKA Prvi Partisan, and Sellier Belliot are both shown on Ammoseek. $1.10 each

(new factory ammunition, not mil or surplus)

What about GEW88s converted to spitzer projectiles? I've heard horror STORIES about receiver failures but never seen any actual data. I know some milsurp 8mm was for MGs and supposedly hot, for various Finnish .303 headstamps as well I hear. New commercial 8mm is made for 88s pressure I've been told, lowest common denomiator legalese. I've read on Gunboards, a couple guys say that they've used milsurp 8mm in their 88s consistently and that the CZ rebuilt GEW 88/05/35 isn't as problematic because the replacement Czech barrels are metallurgically superior. Any thought on usage lore? PAX
The problem with Gew 88 receivers is
they have poor gas handling in the event of a base rupture such as I posted. That type of failure in an 88 action will most likely wreck the rifle and stock.

Ian McCollum did a video a few years back on Turkish Ammo. Very informative.

Resize and trim 30-06 cases. I think they take a .323 bullet if I remember.

The best surplus 8x57 mm ammo I ever bought and shot (in a VZ24) was the Hirtenburger 197gr fmj, imported by Samco Global arms.....long ago

Hirtenburger doesn't mess around. Quality first class battlefield ammo. Far as I know, Hirt is all berdan primed brass cases.

If I was a rich guy without a reloading addiction, I'd load up on Hirt ammo and leave the berdan, useless brass to reloaders, on the ground.

Turk ammo uses a powder that gives a quick pressure spike, you don't use it in any semi auto, unless you have lots of spare parts. In Bolt actions, it will change the color of your shoulder. It all goes bang.

Romanian has the lowest pressure, and why their surplus is priced so high. It's the best fodder for the semi's, and the GEW 88's. Leaves a smelly black oily residue in the gun, but cleans right out with bore solvent. It all goes bang. In such high demand, Romania started new production, that was out of spec so bad, most rounds wouldn't even chamber. Can't say if they ever corrected that.

Yugo surplus has a thick primer, a 98K 18lb firing pin spring, with wear, will take at least two strikes to pop. Replace with a Wolff 22lb, no problems. Pressures are consistent, and just a bit hotter than Romanian. Works well in the semi's, ...with a stiffer hammer spring.

Iranian surplus, is garbage. You can get anything from bang, to click...bang, to click...........bang, to just click, no bang.

If you still looking and interested, I think I have an unopened 800rd crate of Portuguese FNM 8mm. I think they are from the 1970's? I don't think I want ship the entire crate as it is heavy as hell. But maybe a few boxes. oh ya and they are non corrosive.

Surplus 8MM is long gone when it comes to affordable. Bite the bullet and buy new commercial. It's better for your rifle anyways.

I noticed this thread on 8mm Egyptian ammo - how to identify it and a warning not to use it.
