Why not just get one from the CMP?

I would say it all depends on what you want it for. Collection or shooting: $899 is way too low for either and these look rough. A CMP rack grade is about the same in cost and appearance.

If you want a shooter, get the expert grade from CMP. It comes with a new barrel and stock for $1250 and these are damn good rifles.

If you want a collector: there are several ways to get one, but I suggest joining me on the CMP forum and watch for those posting a rifle for sale. These folks know what they are doing and you can pick up a very good rifle for a good price. A rebuild from a site like this would probably cost more than what can be found in the forum and who knows what parts you get or how good it is.

Thanks always figured CMP would be more expensive
Most of my rifles in my collection are all shooters as original as I can find , with trench art ,cuffs stains, etc. Something I can show from their respective time period and still take out to the range and shoot a box or so and let other shooters try them out

For what you described, I don't see why one of these RTI garands wouldn't be great for that. They have the look, not recently refinished with period correct wood. IMHO a cool factor that a fresh park job and a new bright wood stock like some of the CMP ones come with cannot match. This is not to say that a CMP rifle isn't awesome in it's own way, but if you don't want to deal with the paperwork to qualify for a CMP one and go through all that, I wouldn't hesitate to get one of these RTI ones myself. Good luck.

Yeah, these appear to be sold out for most all of them

Had the wrong price for the expert grade at CMP - should be $1150 unless going for the H&R, which is $1450
Another option is a Field Grade for $800 and pick up a new Criterian barrel for $200

Just as with the CMP, if the seller is not showing the metal under the stock.. request photos. Pitting may be evident. Also barrel readings are another area to look at.

M1 Garand rifles sold by CMP are authentic U.S. Government rifles that have been thoroughly inspected, with a variety of available grades.
