    New rifle

Inherited a GERMAN MILITARY GEWEHR 98. Rifle seems to be in good condition, matching serial numbers as far as I've inspected.

Not sure what to do with it. I'm sure ammo is expensive.

Hope it is a nice unbubba'd roller coaster sighted example.

Too many of those Imperial 98's were converted to something apart from their historical factory look.

      Congrats.

I'll have to take some pics, no bayo and no sling though.

Here is a pic of my GEW98. While it is not in the best of condition, it does have all matching numbers and is what yours should look like if it is still in original condition.

Actually 8mm ammo is pretty cheap and available. Surplus 8mm is still out there. It may be corrosive. But in a bolt action it's no big deal at all.

Those rifles always remind me of strategic cowardice.
Moltke was instructed "let the last man on the right brush the Channel with his sleeve." But no, he had to strengthen the left.
Even Jackson's foot cavalry wouldn't have made it work.

a nice bayonet will cost you 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the rifle, depending which exactly you're looking for. Original slings are pricey too, but repros are available, that's what mine wears and I don't feel bad about it.
The sights are really cool to look at, not so much to look through. I enjoy shooting mine but the rear sight is weird.

My 2 cents without knowing anything. I bought a Yugo M48 A a while back, matching SN also, with Bayonet, not really knowing about it but liking older military weapons. It is an 8mm also. I took it out and shot it some, and really liked it! I have not had any problems getting 8mm ammo yet, but bought enough to hold me, some in big "tuna cans" unopened yet. I am very interested in these types of rifles and am trying to learn more. IMO, these are cool pieces of history, and are of importance in the chronological progression of weapons. Gotta figure how to post pics https://imgur.com/7cLI933

How the hell do you get pics to post as a pic, not a link?

I think on imgur, you use the images/bbcode choice for this forum. I use the gimp software to size/format the pic to jpeg 1000x750 size.
