I sighted in my garand and found that the windage is about 4 or 5 clicks off center. I wanted to make the zero in the center of the windage adjustment hashmarks on the back of the sight. Is the method outlined in this video a good method to do that? Any suggestions on the torque to re-tighten the screw on the front sight when done?

Windage re-centering on M1 garand

The easier way for myself was zeroing the rifle at the range by moving the front sight. I am only like 1-2 clicks off center which is good enough for me.
Once you move the front sight using this method you should still verify zero by going to the range again. -
Yes, That is the way I center the M14 and Garand. As he said in the video, remember the front sight moves towards the group-opposite of the rear sight.

You could also set the rear at mechanical wind zero and then adjust the front with a good scope collimator. 1 or 2 minutes from mechanical is acceptable even on a match gun.
Treat the rear like a switch. Know your no wind zero and put it on when you are ready to shoot. Mine is 1 minute left. Adjust accordingly for the present conditions and sighter feedback. Turn it off (back to mechanical zero) when you are done shooting.Comment

Torque? It's not a lug nut on a Caterpillar Quarry Truck, just a 1/4-28 cap screw! ;-)
Snug it up so the sight wont drift under thumb pressure and another little bump with the hex key.Comment

How can you see what you're aiming at with those plastic do-hickys covering your sights?
I know someone with a copy of M40A1 in a genuine McMillian stock sporting the same pattern
as the M1A in the picture. Those two should get together for a photo-op.Comment

You probably already know this, but I'll post it here just in case.

Those cheap in-chamber laser boresight tools are not very good for elevation but they did work well for me in windage. Run it once then open the bolt and rotate the laser a half turn. Close the bolt and repeat the measurement. If the position isn't identical take the average of the two.Last edited by IronsightsRifleman; 07-30-2023, 12:39 AM.Comment
