    Weatherby Questions

I have an elderly family friend in failing health. His wife has asked me to help sell some old rifles. She sent me a list that contains 3 Weatherbys. All I know about Weatherby rifles is that they are beautiful high quality firearms. I emailed Weatherby to see if they will date the rifles for me, but haven't received a response yet. As such, I don't even know if they are C&Rs or not. I have not seen the rifles yet.

Since this is where all the smart fellas hang out, I thought I'd ask if there anybody that can give me some answers to a few questions?

    Thanks in advance.
If it ain't broke, keep fixin' it 'til it is...

Without knowing what you have and serial number, it will be hard for any accurate reply. This is what I have for you, maybe it helps. https://weatherbycollectors.com/wbydata.pdf

Thanks for the reply, that is very helpful davidj. I do have serials for all three of the rifles. One of them appears to be a first year Mark V. Weatherby wasn't much help, just refered me to Flayderman's guide. I plan to go see the rifles in the next week or two.

I believe the historian at Weatherby retired and they never replaced him. I do not think they provide letters any more.

My late brother bought a beautiful older Weatherby in 270 WM. While sighting it in on a bench, the gun blew up. It detonated the rounds in the mag and blew the bench and sandbags apart. Destroyed his shooting glasses and put some shrapnel in his face. The core stock was 20’yds away. He took the gun to Southgate and talked ole Roy himself. 1st question was “we’re you shooting reloads” my brother said yes. He then told him his early guns had a gas blowback issue, but since it was reloads he could go ahead and sue him, cause others have tried and he wouldn’t win. He said he would offer him a new gun at dealer cost. He also said his newer designed guns wouldn’t do this. I witnessed both incidents. I will never own a Weatherby. Research the dates before you risk your life.

Interesting. I have never heard a bad word about a Weatherby. I will keep that in mind if I decide to aquire the rifles.

I bought my dad a 7MM Weatherby magnum Mark V and it was a work of art. It was a Japan made receiver. If your guns have German made receivers I believe that;s a significant premium. The quality of the wood grain is a big selling point. Some calibers are more specialized and may suit a smaller pool of shooters. But then might generate a higher price if it?s just what someone was looking for.

I have a German MK V in 300. It's awesome, except for the 22" barrel. Why on earth they made them with anything but 26" is beyond me.

I live in Sheridan. I have met Adam Weatherby and his wife Brenda. I fixed their dishwasher. If you want to take a vacation, come to Sheridan and stay at my house and we can go to Weatherby together. They are friendly people. They have a great facility, I have toured it.

Make a trip of it. It is worth it to visit this beautiful place.

How did the rounds in the magazine detonate? Was there one in the chamber and it set off the rest of the mag?

Detonated at discharge. Bolt didn?t seal the gas and it blew all 3 rounds left in the mag. Most energy went down thru the sandbags and the bench. Luckily it was sandbagged.

Crazy. Sounds like he got pretty lucky and avoided major injury.
