    Cimarron/Colt 1872 .44

My friend is downsizing his armory and sold me his barely used Cimarron Colt 1872 open top in .44 special.

I took it to the range today and even with the tiny rear sight, it shot pretty well at 10 yards. I used my handloads which are only pushing a 200 gr bullet about 650 FPS so I think I'm within its strength parameters.

Getting the wedge out after lining up the screw required a brass drift, and getting it back in and seated took some spirited tapping from a nylon hammer.

It is very easy to clean since the barrel can be cleaned from the muzzle. Not much holding it all together, so obviously not a revolver for adventurous handloads!

I really like the open tops. I'd like a pair in .38 spc for playing cowboy games in the cartridge class.

I have a Cimarron 1872 Open Top in .38 Special. It is extremely well made and very accurate. I really like it but as you say, the sights are tiny and hard to acquire. With a little patience, it shoots to point of aim with my soft reloads. I did take it all apart and smooth the running surfaces (the edges of some parts were nicked up pretty bad and the sear was gritty and horrible). Result is the smoothest action, lightest trigger release of all of my single actions.
