    Gunsmith for C&R in LA?

I have an NPM M1 Carbine that fails to feed about 50% of the time. I've tried everything: replacing the main spring and magazines, etc. I love the gun, it's a great shooter when it feeds, but it needs professional help. I'm in the Torrance area. Any recommendations?

Randall in Van Nuys. He might be able to help you out.

He’s a regular here. Under AR15Barrel username IIRC

Are you using usgi magazines? 10rd mags? 15rd? 30rd? Magazine spring and follower inserted correctly and clean? New magazine springs and inside of mag is clean? Factory FMJ ammo and not soft points or reloads right? How's the lockup with the magazine release? Which magazine release type do you have? Change the safety spring? I had real crappy magazine lockup so I switched out the safety spring and it locks in tight now. Does the piston freely move? Is the gas piston nut loose? I assume you're oiling it properly or if greasing it not overly smothering it? Is the barrel possibly slightly loose which would affect the operating slide. How's the fit on the operating slide? Does it bind in stock?

All good question. I've spent countless hours on the mags (aftermarket 10s and a USGI 15 blocked to 10, mag springs in various configs) and I've worked on the mag catch, replaced the main springs, tried different ball ammo, inspected the gas piston, etc, etc. I've made several range trips experimenting with different changes. Everything seems fine, yet it still fails. Sometimes the cartridge will end up lodged 90 degrees between the chamber and the bolt. Sometimes the chamber will just be empty. Sometimes it feeds correctly. Time for professional help.

Check very carefully for cracks in the receiver. Had one come through a while back that was cracked completely through at the left lug recess.
