It got me thinking the other day that maybe I should take care of it now so there are no problems down the road. BTW my father has no problem with this, He wants me to have it now, but with no worries. I'm on the fence here, I'm torn about this. I agree with everyone in saying there is no need to register it, providing I was old enough to own it in 1991.
Then the question becomes, what was the minimum age to OWN a handgun prior to 1991? (seriously, I don't know the answer to this one, someone answer this)

Btw, old guns only retain value the older they get. If you refinish it, you will destroy it's value.

On a Federal level, the 1968 Gun Control Act prohibits the transfer of handguns to people under the age of 18, except for certain loans. There is an exemption for a transfer by inheritance of title (but not possession). So is suppose a juvenile could inherit the title to a handgun from somebody who has died, but then not take possession until they are 18 years old. This is just Federal law. I'm not sure when California's age restriction on handgun ownership came about. Somebody here has a version of the CPC that includes all of the dates that laws went into effect.

          bring thread back.
My question is: my uncle inlaw recently passed away. He also got a colt 32 1903. Since he pass away, the colt belong to his wife now. Can his wife give the colt to her mother and then her mother give it to her grand-daughter (whice is my wife)?? How would the Inter-familial transfer work??

Up and down is good, lateral is no good. So, correct it can be done...Not a problem, family=blood...
I believe, but you might want to check DOJ, to be sure.

By the time you do two intrafamily transfers at $19 each, you've spent more than you would on one PPT at $35. You still need a HSC for for intrafamily, so that applies either way. Advantage of the intrafamily transfers is that you don't have to go through an FFL, you just mail in the form and the check. It doesn't even require a signature from the transferer, just the transferee.

True, are you an ffl? They charge money to do the work, might require holding it???

Go as mentioned, mother to wife, allow it in her name, spend the extra few bucks.

But if you want it in your name, that is different story.

Gdma is going to have to show ownership now, as I mentioned get in touch with DOJ...Getting complicated.

Ask for the step by step process, might have it on their site. Call, can't hurt one bit.

Yes, Grandma would need to have an HSC to receive the handgun from her daughter and then your wife would need an HSC to receive the handgun from Grandma. Each transfer would have to involve sending in a separate Intra-Family handgun report to CalDOJ and waiting to receive the confirmation letter back. While there is no legal requirement to wait for the confirmation letter back before sending in the second Intra-Family handgun report, as a practical matter you don't want both forms sitting at the same time on the lady's desk at CalDOJ since she could process them out of order and the handgun would end up registered to the wrong person. It can take anywhere from two weeks to six months to receive the confirmation letter back from CalDOJ.

And all of this supposes that everybody involved is a California resident. If any of these family transfers involve two people who are residents of different States then that transfer will have to go through an FFL in the transferee's State of residence anyway.
