Carcano Carbine Question

hey everyone,

so i'm looking at carcanos on gunbroker, they seem relatively inexpensive and the carbines are kinda cool they're so short! and the foldy bayo reminds me of the m44 a little bit.

i'm currently looking at one which has been chambered for German 8mm.

My question for all y'all is this: these use steyr mannlicher-ish type internal clips, are the 8mm ones hard to find, or does the clip not change due to bullet chambered (ie, any ol carcano clip'll do)?

Clip is different. Normal clips can be modified.
There are questions about the safety of the 8mm conversions. Some were made in 8mm, some were converted.
They were designed for 6.5x52 Carcano and 7,35x51 Carcano round. I would play it safe and get one of these.

what was appealing about this is not having to get yet another type of ammo and just use 8mm, which is abundant and cheap.

As I understand it, the 8mm versions are single shot only--they don't have clips. You could find out a lot more by asking questions on www.gunboards.com "Italian firearms" forum (including whether I'm right about the single shot 8mm bit!).

No, there are 8mm versions that use clips. You modify the regular clips and they will hold 5 rounds instead of the normal 6. The Carcano action actually can handle the pressures of 8mm, but I would be more inclined to use lighter loads. Similar to the ones you would use in a Gew 88 commission rifle. That isn't so much a matter of safety as it is one of sanity. A hot Turk load out of an itty-bitty carbine would be punishing to say the least. They should use the regular .323" diameter bullets.
