AR Blunderbus

I see that IMS in Irvine has a bunch of nice super heavy wall
DOM tubing. My son has asked me to make a blunderbus, to go
with our cannon. For maximum absurdity, I was thinking of taking
an unmachined AR15 lower and making a black powder, percussion
cap blunderbus upper. Evil assault gun, circa 1620.

Collapsible stock, laser sight, forward grip and big wide bell mouth.
Use the trigger system and hand grips from the AR.

Anybody seen one? Has it been done before?

1620 would have been matchlock, I believe, maybe wheellock. Flintlock came in around 1700, caplock around 1830.

A friend and I thought of this, it is still on our back burner. We were going to go with the flintlock and 40+" barrel, maybe a Brown Bess .75 caliber, for maximum Dr. Who applicability. Definitely wanted the lower's trigger to release an external hammer, but we never got beyond the "what if" stage.

One of these days I'll finish my blackpowder upper for my AR. Its pretty much finished.

Today I went down to Riflegear on Harbor in Costa Mesa and took
a look at assembled lowers.

It does not look hard to fab up an offset linkage with the standard AR
trigger. I can move the standard striker back to the rear takedown
pin and use a percussion cap setup similar to my Hawken. Heck,
before that I can just run a fuse through the nipple hole. For takedown
I can just use the mag well. Remember, I will start with an unfinished
lower.

Yeah, I know 1620 would be matchlock. But percussion cap is WAY
easier to fab.

The DPMS adjustable stock and DPMS lower parts kit came in today.
I stopped in at IMS at lunch and picked up more 1/2" wall DOM tubing.
They were out of the small stuff, so I picked up some 1" ID. The
scrap box at home already has the parts for the bell end.

Other than the actual lowers, I have parts for 3 full blunderbuses.
All that is missing is a pile of roundtuits.
