    Winchester 1895 questions...

Anyone here know if an early gun that came with the "V" carrier spring can accept a later magazine assembly that has the coil type carrier spring?

Do we have anyone in NorCal (Roseville/Folsom) that trades in these guns and their parts? How about at the Reno Gun Show? I have been all over the google search and none of the usual suspects has much in the way of these parts.

And finally, The Holy Grail, anyone have a magazine assembly complete in 30gov (aka 30-40 Krag) size they would be willing to part with?

    Thanks so much.

Sorry wish I could help you out. I do have a 30-40 but it is a whole gun. I have been looking for the handguard for my 30-06 carbine for a couple years without any success.

Steve, check with Homestead, I remember them having some.
Original and Reproduction gun parts, specializing Winchesters, Remington, Stevens, buttplates, screws, barrels, receivers, takedown manuals, Jennings - Bryco, firing pins, magazines, Gunsmiths.

THBailey, wish I could help on that one, but I haven't messed with the 95's enough to know. BUT....if there's someone that does know, it'll be Brad Dunbar, or Rob Kassab on the WACA Forums. Might even find the parts you need there too.

Thanks so much Trap55. Truth be known I posted this same message up on the WACA forum too. No response yet. Sure wish I could get a peek at their book.

Is it a Flatside, and have you got it dated?

Not a flatside, just a humble sporting rifle made circa 1906 according to the online sources. Number is 56118.

I might have a parts gun available. I'll check when I get to the shop.

question for those who know - what is a "flatside" 1895 please and what is the difference between that and "humble sporting rifle" features? I have an 1895 in 303 British which I love but Ive never done any research into the model really before so I am intrigued.

The way I understand it, the 30-40 guns were marked "30 US", 30-03 and 30-06 guns were marked "30 Govt '03" and "30 Govt '06" as well as "30 Gov US".
Good thing it is not confusing!!

The "Flatside" is an early model, distinguishable in that frame does not have fluting or ridge contouring, serial range approx. 1-5000. Mfg. 1895-1896. I believe all the later variations were not flatsides.
Google up some images and you will see what they mean.

Well, got some parts and got her back together. FWIW, the answer to my original question is: Yes, the earlier "V" spring can accept the later coil spring version of the magazine. Also, the later version up through about 75,000 will take the earlier "V" spring. Seems Winchester kept making the required relief cuts in both wood and metal long after adopting the coil spring.
