Headspace on Mosin bolt

I know this may be a dumb question but here goes:
Is possible to test a headspace on a Mosin bolt without getting a headspace
gauge? Or do I just suck it up and pony up for one?
(I was having issues with a bolt and just decided to get another one)

If you're going to collect and have multiple Mosins, just buy one, they're not that expensive and handy to have.

If you just have one Mosin, borrow one.

i bought a "no go gauge" awhile back. the little disk you put on the bolt face. It was more for safety.

i dont think i ever found one that was in the danger zone though.

I am guessing you are having the opposite issue with light primer strikes?

this is a rimmed cartridge. spacing is on the rim. you do need to to check the firing pin protrusion however.

Headspace can be adjusted with different bolt heads. No need to replace the whole thing.



The coin type gauges are pretty nice. That's what I have used for years.

did you measure the pin protrusion using the little Key/Tool for it?

For a one time thing, it can be done with a spent boxer primed case, a spent primer, and good calipers. Only works with rimmed cases though.

Decap the spent primer, and put it back in place, but only enough to not fall out, then chamber the case. The camming action of the bolt will seat the primer deeper in the pocket.

Measure the thickness of the rim, add the protrusion of the primer, the result is the headspace.

You can also measure the entire case length, with and without the bolt-seated primer, the delta is your headspace.

Friend and I got together with over a dozen on his bench, all different years and models. Pulled all the bolts, and one at a time checked them in all the guns. Every single one was in spec.
