If it was me, I would hold out for one that has more matching parts and hasn't been reworked. Part of the charm of those Gew98's is the rollercoaster rear sight.

Be prepared to pay quite a bit more than what they are asking though. Five ish years ago I bought an all matching 1916 Mauser Gew98 off of Gunbroker and, IIRC, I paid $800 plus shipping and tax. While mine isn't the prettiest one out there, it is an honest example of an unrebuilt wartime made and used G98 with a very good bore.

I agree with highpower. That one seems a bit over priced, and doesn't have the Lange Visier (roller coaster) rear sight. There a few on Gunbroker with the original sights at a similar price.

The one below is well travelled seeing service by the Germans in WWI the Polish army sometime after that, then once again with the Germans during WWII.

If it's the look of the Lange Visier sight you are after you might consider the Peruvian 1909 in 7mm Mauser. They are exceptionally well made and beautiful rifles.

A K Kale Turkish Mauser is a similar, cheaper alternative.

          Keep sewrching

Partly matching example in good overall condition which I purchased about 13 years ago. Scratched a long time itch for a GEW 98.

Ahhhhh you guys are just making me want one even more!!

I will probably hold out on this one then. I do want the Lange Visier sights and want it in 8mm.

I don't really care about matching parts, I mainly want a shooter.

I bought my one and only Gew 98 a few years ago from Dennis Kroh. They are neat rifles with tons of history. Mine had a lazy stamping of the crest, with only half being legible. Mostly non-matching, but nice condition and great bore.

I knew the Gew 98 would gain new interest with all the good WW1 films that have come out lately.

You can still find a shooter for $700 or less. Matching original tough to find under $1k. Getting harder to find under $1,500 even. Gew 98 is missing from my collection too, but I have a matching 1909 Peruvian.
