Oversized Garand Stock

I have all I need to build a 308 Garand and someday will get to Randall in the Valley to barrel it. I think I have a Boyds laminated stock that looks brand stinking new but it is pretty oversized. Since I am not going USGI repro here, I am not too concerned about most of it but the butt stock is considerably larger than the butt plate and I am no wood worker.

Has anyone dealt with this successfully, do I go in another direction or do I send it off and to whom?

you wont be able to "size" a laminated stock very easily.

Everything seems to fit except the butt plate. So instead of selling it I'm going to get out sandpaper!

You're probably going to find that stock is fat/exceeds specifications in other areas as well (like the magazine well). Those early Boyd's stocks (at least, no idea regarding the current production) were known for that, from what I recall reading/hearing.

I got one of the walnut Boyd's stocks many years ago (before the CMP was working with Dupage) to stock a woodless barreled receiver from the CMP. It was fat, and still is, but DGR did whatever he did to get the rifle into the stock. I can't recall what he said about the job, but I can tell you the trigger guard on that one is awful hard to open/close.

Maybe some of the woodworker guys here can make some suggestions; I have some woodworker friends, for sure if I had one of those I would be asking before I tried anything on my own.

This is at least 15 years old and I fitted the action and receiver with no issues. Unless someone chimes in on a solution, I'm going to start on the butt stock. Now if I can find the handguard clip tool....

The laminated wood can be slimmed down with coarse sandpaper. In reality, no one will question an oversize laminated stock fit to the metal. The laminated wood is not any harder than a regular stock.
