      Yes. It was protruding.

I wonder if it was installed upside down as some Chinese SKS firing pins can be. This will jam them. What type of SKS is it?

Yeah those will get jammed with the pin protruding if installed upside down on the early Chinese SKS. Several other makes of SKS also use this style of firing pin. That may not have been your problem but now that the firing pin has been removed, it could be your next problem

The most important thing is to shake the bolt after assembly and observe the firing pin moving easily back and forth in and out of the hole in the breech face.

Take note of the proper orientation in the bolt:

How's the bolt face? Rusted firing pin can be an indication of popped primers in the rifle's history. Busted primers can wreak havoc on that can lead to slam fires.

Specifically, is there any volcano-ing around the fp hole?

My old (apparently unissued) Norincos are like this.
Made me think the PRC armorers use a press.

Actually a good way to get them back in is to use a bench vice to press (squeeze) it in

The bolt face seems ok. Nothing extraordinary. I'll take a pic this weekend when I do another cleaning.

Replacement firing pin came from AIM Sports. It was all black but I put it in and I'm able to shake it freely after multiple attempts. I think I'm GTG.

.22 or .177 copper brushes will both work.

                              Nice. Great save.

Looking forward to the range report.
