    CMP "Salvage Grade" Enfields...

I've got a buddy that really would like a 1917 Enfield but as you all probably know, the CMP is sold out of the "Service Grade" Enfields. They do, however, still have the "Salvage Grade" rifles available. The description on those rifles sounds pretty ominous, though.

Has anyone ordered one of these, or known someone who has? I was just curious about how bad they really were.

Saw some at the South Store last month. Most were missing parts or had bad barrels. They did have some rack grade Parade M1917's (Nickle with painted white stocks), for $250. I found a nice Winchester with great rifling and the muzzle gauge measures 1. If he is just looking for a shooter maybe there is a way to order one of these. The white paint comes right off with Citristrip.

I've not ordered one before, but you can always replace barrels and stocks

Look for one at a gunstore

I got a CMP 1903 that was in pretty bad shape. The barrel was shot out and the magazine spring broke. I should have just gone with one from a gunstore and saved lots of cash. I'm rebuilding the gun, but I'm not liking it.

At least a $150-200 for a barrel plus installation and probably the same for a stock -- When done you still have a bastard, buy an original.

That depends on whether he wants a shooter or a collectible. If you're going to shoot the hell out of that thing, I HOPE you're not buying a collectible/original. If you do, I hope you put no more than 100 rounds down the barrel per year and then clean it and store it in the safe.

Personally, I'm not that kind of guy that buys safe queens. Guns were meant to be shot so I don't really care if they are WWII rebuilds. But if I were to buy a collectible, then it would be so priceless that I would put it behind some glass and hang it on a wall like one of those .45 ACP Lugers. I don't have the kind of disposable income to waste on a museum piece.

              Interesting...

My current CMP order has got to be close to processing. I'm wondering if they're going to give me the: "We don't have this, but we have this instead." call...

If they do, I might inquire about the availability of the Parade Enfields...

Thanks for the heads up, man!!! If we ever cross paths, hit me up for a frosty, frothy beverage of your choosing...

If your thinking about getting one, here is what mine looks like after stripping off the white paint with Citristrip and finishing with BLO and Beeswax. CMP's code on the tag is RM1917RCER 1917 RACK GRADE CEREMONIAL.
