So, I walked into a Pawn shop the other day.....

And walked out with this SKS. It's not anything all that exciting, but it looks like it was shot seldom, if ever since it hit these shores. I think what attracted me to it was that it is the Type 56 rifle collectors have dubbed the "French tickler". For some reason that just tickles my fancy, pardon the pun.

I don't particularly collect SKS's, but then again I do have a half dozen of them, so maybe I do?

Made at the Jianshe arsenal (factory 26) in 1979. Hard for me to believe that it is now 43 years old and almost a C&R just on age alone. It is missing the cleaning rod (but I believe I have one back in Reno) and it does have the cleaning kit in the buttstock. Overall it is as clean an SKS as I have seen lately which is why I bought it

Does anyone know what the "K" means after the serial number?

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).

Nice score. Is that a pinned or screw in barrel?

That's a nice looking late date Chinese SKS. I really like some of the later produced carbines.

Does it say KFS Atl as importer? Kengs Firearms Antlanta imported Polytechs which have K (and other) suffixes

Very clean, nice score. If you are able to share, how much did it cost you? I scored a nice Chinese SKS (not as nice as yours though!) last year in the Marketplace at $500 so if you were even within a couple of hundred, that's not bad considering condition.

                  It's a screw in.

I'm pretty sure it was imported by Kengs although it doesn't specifically say it. The receiver is marked "SKS 7.62X39 Made in China By Norinco Poly ATL GA". I know that Kengs was, and still is, in Atlanta. I was thinking it may have been added by Kengs (It is a different font) but want to confirm it if I can.

After a bit of negotiation, I paid $560. Way more than I ever thought I would pay for a Chinese SKS, but when I checked Gunbroker to get a feel for the current market, it was about an average price, if not a bit under. I am still looking for a blade bayonet Chinese SKS. Once I find one at a reasonable price, I will be done with looking for Chinese SKS's. I wasn't really looking for this one, but it was just so darn clean I couldn't pass it up.

I remember when you could buy them at the Great Western for $69 each, or $600 for a crate of ten. If you bought a crate, they would throw in a case of ammo.
