    How to confirm a real M1-D ?

I have a girl that inherited a handful of guns

One is an International Harvester M1-D

She's looking for a new home for it and I'm trying to confirm if it's truly an M1D

Serial number is likely the best… I bought two of them from CMP quite a few years ago now.

There’s a lot of fakes out there.

      Scott Duff article on M1Ds

As all M1D rifles were rebuilt rifles, the receiver may be of any manufacture and of any serial number produced prior to the date of the rebuild. The same applies to the individual components, any part made prior to the date of the rebuild is correct. All M1D barrels were made by Springfield Armory. The earliest observed M1D barrel is dated 5-51. M1D barrels have been counterfeited and merit carefully examination. Nearly all M1D barrels were stamped with drawing number D7312555. M1D barrels manufactured through the fall of 1952 had the drawing number stamped on the top, underneath the rear hand guard. M1D barrels manufactured after the fall of 1952 had the drawing number stamped on the right side, adjacent to the date.
I'm not going to paste the whole article here, but have a look at the link.

Send a letter to The CMP asking if the SN was sold by them as a M1D and when. The CMP made up some of there own after they sold the original M1Ds and they identify them in a slightly different manner, but don't remember the details. Without a CMP cert it is very difficult to authenticate a M1D.

Does it come with a cheek pad and scope/mount?

Is the Barrel marked D731255? Some were built on IHC, H&R, Win plus SA but they would have the same Barrel Group dated 1951-52 built in 60’s. 53/54 Barrels very rare.

If it has a different Dwg. No. It could have been updated in the civilian market.

The only real way to authenticate it would be if it has CMP paperwork associated with it.

All the parts to build one were available, and many were put together in garages around the country.

I will assume if you had paperwork, then you would have mentioned it.
If it was sold by the DCM (pre CMP) then a CMP research request MIGHT show it but the CMP does not have complete DCM records.

As mentioned in the article surplus barrels were sold and homebuilt M1D exist.

The first thing everyone checks is the drawing number on the barrel. Notice what Scott Duff says:

Nearly all M1D barrels were stamped with drawing number D7312555.

I don't know what the other drawing number(s) are. You might ask on the CMP forum. There was quite the dust up on the CMP forum when a person received a M1D with something other than the standard number. It was then I learned of the existence of the other numbers. I did not pursue it since it didn't apply to my rifle.
