Is it legal in this state to make your own blackpowder in California? Aside from knowing what your doing, is it against the law? I haven't been able to get any. I'm retiring soon and want to get back into it.

I think I posted this thread twice as I didn't think it took the 1st go round. I make my own percussion caps but was tinkering with the idea of making a small amount of BP. I just want to know if it was legal. I don't want to spend my retirement years in a state or federal prison.Comment

Yep you posted twice. You do not know what YAHOO stands for.? (You always have other options) (LOL) Someone on Calguns can help you unless they are unvaxxed stump broke horse trainers from Texas. Again (LOL)Last edited by edgerly779; 05-16-2022, 5:50 AM.Comment

Breaking News today out of OPs city:
Our favorite fire marshal is trying his best today to quell neighborhood fears of another
illegal backyard fireworks plant from blowing up the other half of the North side of town.

On a more serious note-
1) "Like Fire and Powder: Black Powder for the Modern Shooter"
by Brett Gibbons. An easy read but very detailed instructions.
2) Getting legal advice from folks exchanging ignorances on the internet is probably not the best way to stay out of trouble.THBailey

I agree with "Like Fire and Powder" recommendation, i liked it so much i bought the book AND the digital version on Amazon.
Not tried it yet, but its on my list of things to do this summer. No idea on the laws of making it though.sigpic

I'll third the recommendation on the book. It was a good book even though I have no intention of making my own powder. He also has a good group on Facebook, called "Paper Cartridges". He makes odd bullets and stuff from the percussion era.On a more serious note-

I believe you are referencing the International Fire Code only and NFPA 495. Otherwise, the state building code and the local authorities may have another opinion (AHJ)
You are limited to 20 pounds of black powder within a residence.
(NFPA 495)
"14.4.3 Black Powder intended for personal use in quantities not exceeding 9.1 kg (20 lb) shall be permitted to be stored in residences where kept in the original containers and stored in a wooden box or cabinet having walls of at least a 25.4 mm (1 in.) nominal thickness."
IFC 2018 section 5606.4.1 limits a R-occupancy (Residential) to 20 pounds.
