The real question is is it real, or a repo made (possable in the 1800's) for tourist sales.

              Why can’t it be fired?

I have one similar to that. They are hard to date because it seems the Japanese made very little progress in firearms between the late 1600's and early 1800's. They came into possession of a Portuguese smooth bore musket in the middle 1600's and kept making these until 1850 or so. The different symbols show which warlord's armory this came from, but that is unlikely to be from the 1700's as it has a fair bit of decoration. The early ones were more plain according to articles I read. There are woodblock images of Sumurai firing these in battle in the 1800's.

They were such an isolated country that they acquire no new firearms tech and did not evolve these much at all. I also do not think they welcomed tourists in the 1800's and sold them souvenir repro guns. They were likely still using tanegashimas in battles at that time!

These come up regularly in many high-end auctions at RIAC and Hunt, etc. With lots of gold and silver inlays and in great shape, they can go for $4K plus, but they usually don't attract alot of bids and sell for $1400-2000. YMMV. Mine hangs on a wall an has some cool inlay work.

There was not "standard" caliber ball for these and they vary. But all those I have seen use incredibly heavy barrels so perhaps one could fire it with a light power load. But I am not recommending you do that.
