    New Hex Mosin, convert/add scope?

Would I be destroying the gun?

It can't be any different than a rearsenal or reproduction, right?

I'd like to make it and PE/PEM. Just to be "historically accurate" -as I don't think Hex were made with PU scopes- yet more pleasant to shoot at distance.

    I'm no collector.

I cherish my hex, couple of them on the wall, shooting and bubba work on the round ones

Let's just say, the results are rarely worth the cost and/or sacrifice. Sure you can replace the rear sight with a small section of rail, and adding a compact scope would give you some range, but everyone I've known that has tried just wasn't happy with the results. The people I know (myself included) that have hacked them up to try to do it right - the improvement isn't much, and then you're left with a jacked up and irreversible Mosin Bubba.

        Darn. Ok.

Yeah being a hex makes it harder to do a conversion because it is more valuable, in a sense.

        Slightly discouraged now.

I have used the S&K no drill mount on a Mauser, and they make them for Mosins too. It would be more of a scout scope, but you will have optics without permanent mods to the rifle.

Mosins are now officially too expensive to Bubba. Do what Bobby suggests!

Ok. I'll look for a no drill mount.

depends on your point of view. A "hex 9130" in my opinion was a marketing gimmick to convince people they are worth more. In reality, they are already hacked up rifles. The arsenal did it, but cut up it is, since it used to be a 91 or dragoon, and now it isn't. It's the equivalent of the CMP 1911's and folks are upset they got a later arsenal replaced slide (as I did). It's literally the same thing. Yes they have their historical place as a legitimate issued version, but I don't think they are special. A non-hacked up hex should be (and usually are) actually worth more. Although they aren't $90 anymore, mosins still were made by the millions, so they just aren't that special.

                  True, sbo80.

                  I was eyeing this:

A mosin is a mosin as far as I can understand with millions of them floating around. I wouldn't be surprised if we got Ukrainian Mosin surplus in the near future.

I always considered a K31 with a troop tag to being special.

But a mosin is something else.

And I figured, if it helped me enjoy actually shooting the gun instead of a wall prop, maybe it'll be worth it.

I mean, I wouldn't be doing this to a still in wrapper WW2 surplus gun.

I'll sleep on it. I don't like the look of scout mounts, would rather do irons. But a reproduction style build, I mean, even classic arms and other C&R FFLs were selling them and they sold.

If your a shooter ,competitor, and rifle has a good bore by all means put a PE/PEM/PU on it..

Rare? No, desirable yes in original condition. There are enough of them out there (most in hoaders safes) but more suited to serious competition out to longer distances then 100 yard wannabee sniper ranges.

Trying to find a good machinist to mount bases too, or trying to find a modern gunsmith who understands 70 year old mounts is a bigger challenge.

I've done 10-15 PU mts and 6-7 pe mts and they are not easy and require many setups with clamping setups, and locating each hole for drilling and tapping

I have 2-3 PE hex mounts if interested at attractive price if interested.

dont do it... leave it as is. you will destroy the rifle.

                        I got a 1918 hex mosin M39 made by Westinghouse with a 1944 Sako barrel for $90 in 2004.
I welded the bolt, drilled and tapped. It shoots the 7.62x53r accurately, but the chamber and the bore are tight.

I got a 1936 Tula action for $50 in 2002. In 2021 I put a Lilja 6.5 Vostok barrel on it and shot a deer.

I converted a $50 mosin to 300 WIn Mag with a Krieger barrel and shot a deer.

I converted an $80 1939 Mosin to 25 Krag Ackley with a Bartlein barrel and shot a deer.

Anything done to modify an original military arm (and yes, I consider an arsenal rebuild as original) will degrade the value and collectibility of the gun.

Don’t ask me how I know.

                          My advice? Don’t do it.

I'll think it over. The gun is still in jail. I just don't see the value in protecting a mosin vs a 1903 Enfield.
