    Question about black powder pistols

Lytle creek firing line range allows it.

Where are you located? If in SoCal ASR allows it and APTS allows it on certain ranges and only with no patches because they are worried about grassfire. Anywhere on BLM is legal, just be mindful of your spark.

I’m in OC, my preference is BLM, so that works, thanks!

I just purchased a cap and ball revolver, a 1861 Navy, and took it to the angeles range recently. My friends supplied the caps, balls, powder, and bore butter.

I sat on the fence for a long time on black powder, but glad I finally got into it. Now to find the elusive percussion caps.

I've shot black powder at Sac Valley.

I prefer BLM/forest, just because the time it takes to load etc doesn't fit well on a typical range firing center/rim fire. It's not a big deal for single shot, but loading and handling a 6-shooter on a typical public range is not enjoyable to me.

Be careful where ever you shoot it, patches or not. Black powder (or the fake stuff) sparks WILL start a fire quick fast and in a hurry. If it is dry enough for the sparks to get one started, you'll be damn lucky to put it out before it spreads.

                Or so they tell me...

The traditional wadding of 'tow' is very satisfactory and works great in smooth bores. I liked it for revolvers too. But it will lay on the ground and smolder but cardboard won't do that. It's a bigger issue these years of so many forest fires.

I wouldn’t advert that. Check the regs on re-sale of BP.

Anyways, up here, we don’t shoot BP on non-range land between about May and October due to the fire risk. Burning BP is shot out the barrel about 10 feet in front of you, and patches can smolder for minutes.

In the green grass, GTG. And at the groomed ranges, totally GTG.

They will get mad at you at indoor ranges . Don’t ask me how I know.

You guys are over exaggerating the fire dangers.

If you are using properly lubed 100% cotton patches they will not burn after shooting. If you are shooting out chaff streamers of unburned powder from the end of your gun you are wasting large amounts of powder only for more recoil and less accuracy.

Black powder guns are not any more fire starters than modern guns can be.
