    Springfield Sporter

I saw this Springfield Sporter and wondered about the stock. I confirmed the Serial number is a SS receiver and the barrel has the star gauge. But the stock has no cut out for mag cut off. Looks like some of the M1922 stocks that I've seen.

Is this a proper SS stock?

Brophy's books says the sporters were fitted to M1922 stocks. Looks legit.

From the pictures it looks pretty good to me. I had one thirty odd years ago and as I recall, the stock looked the same.

        Thanks, Ken and HP.

I won this one at an online auction the other day and will go over it carefully when it arrives. Additional pics and a range report to follow.

Mine is certainly not all original - Grandfather had work done after he bought it from DCM in late 1928/early 1929. I've had it for about 20 years now.

Stock configuration on the OP model looks correct, has the stock pin ahead of the forend band and correct buttplate. Maybe it's the photo but the wood looks a tad different than what I'd expect. Or, could be refinished but otherwise correct stock?

Fine looking sporter, Fletch. I think it was quite common for owners to modify and personalize Springfield Sporters, in order to suit their own tastes. Mine, for instance, has had the striker knob removed, possibly to speed up the lock time.

The auction pics were fairly dark and I lightened the ones that I posted. Here are a few pictures that I didn't lighten. Of course, no way of knowing how well the auction pics actually depict the coloring of the stock...

              ^^
              That looks all right.

I've been thinking about removing the scope mount and going with the peeps. Looks so much better, I'm used to them on other rifles and my eyes are still sharp.

My M1922 came with scope blocks on it so I just put a scope on and shoot it that way. At this point in my life my eyes are shot (pun intended) and I need the magnification to do justice to the rifle's accuracy.

A cool starry bra from me:

Working at a gun shop I spied an 03 barreled receiver laying on the floor behind the counter. it had a Lyman 48 rear sight, 03 front, and two scope blocks. The muzzle had a star on it. The owner gave me a worker price of $25 for it.

I put it in an 03 stock with all milled parts, bought a surplus bolt, put an A3 handguard on it. Headspace? Who needs to check stinkin' headspace!

It shot great, I had no idea it was the remnants of a Springfield sporter. I took it with me to Germany when I went on active duty and traded it to an NCO for a Chinese SKS.

The gunshop owner really had no idea how they ended up with it and why it was stripped as I found it. Who would strip out a perfectly good Sporter? There was nothing wrong with the bore or receiver.

Thus, my brief touch with owning a (sort of) real Springfield sporter.

The Springfield Sporter came in. Ran by my FFL holder to take a quick look.

The stock and metal are in fabulous shape. No "P" stamped on the pistol grip or any other cartouches that I could find.

I did find the serial number EP'd on the bolt body, but it is very light. Bolt appears to be original.

Didn't have much time before the rifle went in my FFL's safe.

I believe the EP s.n. on the bolt body was done on NM 03's so that tracks for the SP too.

I brought home my new Springfield NRA Sporting Rifle. Took a few additional pics. Looking forward to submitting a range report

Only cartouche I could find was this "11" stamped in the pistol grip. Anyone know anything about this?

Did those have the star gauged barrels?

                            Nice looking rifle too!

They do have star gauge barrels. I was able to confirm the rifle is an NRA sporting rifle through the Springfield Research Service.
