There is a lot better stuff out there than WD40...

My experiences with it have lead me to really distrust the stuff. It doesn't really do anything else it's "supposed" to. Lousy penetrant, lousy lubricant...

Yep. I used to use the stuff and always wondered why ther'd be some spots still UNDER the stuff. Several Internet boards have had members run thier own tests on the stuff vs. others.

Water/soap....rinse, Dry (use heat if necessary then a decent penetrating lube...I'm kinda partial to CLP/Breakfree............
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered....

WD40 is good for water displacement, cleans well and is good for short term rust protection. If WD40 is left on medal it turns to a gummy varinsh that will gum up any thing. I like using it after cleaning black power rifle in sopy water. I dry patch it good and re oil with Breakfree. Mike

The British Army (WWI and WWII maybe earlier can't remember now) issued a funnel (special MK dingy thing)to units to pour boiling water down the barrel. That and the pull through (with oil) was all they used.

I'm sure other armies did the same thing --- just remember reading on the British army and seeing pictures of them doing it.
