Very hard to find a pre 1898 C96 at a price that you won't have to sell a kidney to afford.

But....they are cool as all get out and while they are as ergonomic as a brick, they are a hoot to shoot and I can practically guaranty that you will draw a crowd at a range if you bring one out to shoot. IMO having to go through the Commiefornia BS paperwork is well worth the effort to get one.

I picked up this matching number (including the stock/holster 1916 vintage military proofed, commercial C96 with the original leather carrier a few years ago. Even though I paid what I thought was all the money for it, time has shown that I actually got a decent deal.






Sometimes I bring it out with my 1916 LP08 Artillery Luger to have a bit of a long range shoot out. They always draw a crowd.

I bought one of those Chinese imported 9mm Broomhandles in the 80's - from Traders in San Leandro - in the good ol' days.

It broke the first time I fired it - as I recall it was a part of the bolt stop that cracked - and stung me in the hand. (minor pain - nothing serious - and Trader's fixed it for free)

I never fired any of my Broomhandles after that - they are - in my mind - for collecting - not shooting.

Beautiful piece. Question about those grips? Never seen plastic ones. Also the receiver looks so clean. I have a red9 that has some really awful machine chatter marks. Is a pre1914 better machined?

7.62x25 will blow the heck out of a 30 Mauser

7.62x25mm Tokarev was designed as a hotter variant of the 7.63x25mm Mauser cartridge.
It was designed so that 7.63x25mm Mauser could still be used in 7.62x25mm Tokarev chambered firearms, but 7.62x25mm Tokarev ammo could not be safely used in a 7.63x25mm Mauser chambered firearm.

The Russian Empire used 7.63x25mm Mauser chambered pistols and when the Soviet Union arose they had that ammo on hand. So, when the Soviets went to standardized on a new handgun, they used it as the starting point for designing a new pistol cartridge that would be proprietary to them.
^they had a debate over selecting a 7.62mm or 9mm pistol. 7.62mm was selected due to the old argument of being able to use rejected 7.62mm rifle barrels to make pistol barrels and submachinegun barrels.

They do need to be transferred like a modern handgun, (or a C+R handgun if you have the two pieces of paper FFL and COE.)
However, they can be legally fitted (not in CA) with a shoulder stock like an NFA weapon, so there is that

I bought some Wolf Springs and a little reference book at SAR, the book is deceptively helpful.
Safety catch differences and reasons for, hammer differences and reasons, dates, quality was great, became less-so, and then strangely enough got great again, before ending.
All C96's are absolutely Not equal.

I bought a ton of DWM and Mauser stamped clips on Ebay, cheap.
The ammo is vintage and Fiocchi modern.

Mine was made in 1912. Grips are hard rubber, with WM logo, not sure how common they were.

Be careful in Commiefornicatia with the holster/stock. You can own them both but if you put the stock on the pistol you have a SBR and need an NFA tax stamp. Just sayin'.......
