    CMP Garand - what grade

I have been wanting a Garand since I was a kid and saw the pictures of my grandfather in Korea with his perched up next him in just about every photo. I have always admired the beauty and history of the M1. I have been eyeballing them for many many years but never pulled the trigger since I was always skeptical of the ones I see in the shops. I feel like time is running out to own one that really has history behind it. My question to you guys out there is:

what grade did you chose and why?

what is your opinion on owning one with history and still wanting to take it out shooting?

    .30-06 or .308 & why?

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Pretty sure there's only one grade available right now. Buy that one!

right. I noticed that too but didnt know if the other grades that sold out just here recently (2021) would come back in stock at some point.

That is kind of what concerns me and makes me think I better just jump on it now.

Wish I would have did it when I was still active duty. dont see retired as being an eligibility option which is a bummer.

SG if you want a shooter that's still correct enough historically. Most of my Garands are Service Grade, and some are Correct Grade.

Anything from CMP is going to be a treasure. Get what you can get. Worst case you might end up replacing a part or two.

Garand availability will soon go the way we have seen foreign surplus suddenly dry up. And when it happens, it's going to be fast, succinct, and immediate - catching a lot of people off guard. You'll still be able to get plenty from those held in private hands, but asking prices are going to go galactic overnight.

From what I'm seeing, I think it has already started.

Even if there is any lend-lease stuff out there to be returned, this current administration will cock-block it somehow, no different than Obama had.

Any grade that is available and you can afford. You can't go wrong. I got the Service Grade because it wasnt much more than a Field Grade. I also had a Service Grade Special with refinished receiver, new barrel and new wood. It was a beauty but I decided to sell it and buy more Service Grades.

My advice is order the maximum, 3-5 at a time. Keep the best ones and sell the others to pay for yours. But i guess that wont work now since you cant DROS more than one semiauto rifle every 30 days. And CMP wont ship to your door anymore.

When I bought 3 at a time I ended up receiving an HRA LEAD rebuild with a birch replacement stock that has the orange Letterkenny stamp on it and NM op rod. I was stoked! First shot I took with it was a bullseye at 100yds. Chit you not. I kept all 3 of them. I've only sold the one special grade because it didnt have a USGI bbl and I could get the most for it. But kind of wish i had kept it. It was a beauty.

People have been saying the CMP will run out of M1s for the past 10 years, It's bound to happen eventually, could be soon. Order one now. You'll feel stupid if you never get one and they finally run out.

But the best grade you can afford. You won't regret it.

should have added the .30-06 or .308 & why?

I am leaning more toward the .30-06. .308 does sound nice though but if I have read the 30-06 is the more iconic Garand.

I would not ever get a Garand in .308, save for the certain Navy models that can be certified as correct.

Maybe down the road I might as a shooter, since I already have several nice Garands, but certainly if I were looking to buy my first Garand I would go with the nicest grade or matching-parts Garand I could afford, with the best ME/TE numbers I could find, with an original stock in as best of condition I could find, just to be happy with it.

I've got an unissued Springfield and more than one all-matching H&R and IHC examples... but to be candid, stuff like my Danish and Letterkenny SA rebuilds, and low serial number early WWII SA with its original stock and clearly readable SA cartouches/EMcF marked inspector marks - those I like even more than the finer examples - even though the latter is not all matching, the bore has an M.E. of 0.0 and throat shows a T.E. of 1, and it's the original barrel (photo below).

                        Service grade if you can
You get a barreled receiver already dialed in. Good reading on the barrel
You can change everything else if you want

                        Or expert
                        It's in stock
The barrel is new and will shoot perfect.
You can buy everything else if needed, but the barrel and receiver are already dialed in

                        308 or .30 ? Who knows?
I guess if your getting a new barrel who cares what caliber
If you are going for original .30
                        B

If you want a shooter, go expert grade. Nothing shoots quite like a brand new 0/0 barrel with new tight wood.

If only getting one, I'd go -06, but I wanted a 308 for a shooter, because of cost/availability of ammo, and only needing to bring one type of ammo with me when I go shoot. But I've got several -06s also.

Order Three(3) of the best you can get from the CMP.

Then keep the one(s) that sing to you, and sell off the also-run(s) at market.
