Garand safety question

I disassembled and cleaned my new CMP Garand's trigger group assembly, but even without the gobs of sticky cosmoline it's still really tough to engage the safety. Flipping the safety off is a bit stiff but not too bad, while flipping it on takes some real effort. I'm not sure what's making it so tough, is it just the clip eject spring that provides the safety's tension? Is that just how a Garand's safety is supposed to be?

It's supposed to be like that. Both of my M1's are like that and they both are from CMP. Does your rifle shoot and cycle normally?

Just got the rifle yesterday, aside from the trigger group it's disassembled (but cosmo-free), so I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I've never tried out a Garand safety before, but the Mini-14 safety seems a lot smoother. Glad to hear it's not abnormal.

Is the hammer cocked when you are applying the safety? It must be.

Yes, when the rifle is cocked and you flip the safety to the "on" position, it is really quite stiff.

Flipping off the safety should be much easier, but still stiff by many rifle's standards.

I once had a Mini-14, and the safety on it is much lighter than the M1's. You are going to shoot it at the July 4 Shoot-n-Que at Chabot?

then it sure is safe! mine is stiff, just lift weights with your fingers, it wont feel so stiff anymore!
