    Headspacing?

    umm headspace gauges.

I picked up a K98 earlier this week, but I'm not sure if I can shoot it. The seller has taken really good care of the gun and it looks awesome (with the hood and everything!) but non-matching(bah). However, he hasnt had a chance to shoot it so no one knows if the headspacing was done . Where does one find these things?

Or maybe anyone locally have one I can borrow?

I might have a set of 7.92x58 no go and field in SAAMI specs. Its either 8mm guages or a 7.62x51, I'll have to check.

You could always do it the bubba way; 8mm round, then 8 layers of masking tape on the rear to see if it closes. I wouldn't suggest it, but its an option.

You could shoot it from around a corner with a piece of string. If it explodes, you shouldn't shoot it.

Tried the Bubba Method, seems to work, but need a definite answer. I'll check Brownells.

            Thanks guys!

See, if this were an arisaka, I wouldnt mind risking it knowing that most arisaka have really beefy actions. But in the case of this rifle that I paid over the $250 mark for, I really rather not risk it

i have the go-nogo gauges for 8mm mauser in the san diego area. paid $30 for both. my milsurps have been spot on so I haven't worried about it. I was thinking to keep them long enough until I found a german ww2 mauser, but I might let them go to recover funds.

The only one you need is a "field" gauge. If it passes (doesn't close) that, and it does chamber a round (this is what the "go" gauge also does), you're good to go. The no go is only for rebarreling.

Well damn, it wasn't the 8mm guages. It wasn't even the .308 guages; 30-06? Must have been when I barreled the Garand. Sorry dude.

Military chambers are "roomy" and many will close on a no-go. Just get the feild gauge.
