    M1 Garand tool

Does anybody know where I can buy the multi-tool for the M1 Garand? The one that fits in the buttstock?

I just picked up an M1 last night and am super excited to break it apart and all the usual jazz one does to a new firearm.

Also, I have looked around for the grease used on the M1 but can't seem to find it. Is there something specific I'm supposed to be looking for?

    Thanks,
    Tim

Its really not necessary, all you need is a large screwdriver for the gas plug. About the only other thing that requires a tool is taking the sights apart.

you don't really need a specific tool to disassemble....short of a large flat blade for the gas cap.

original grease is either plastilube that i believe is available at the scott duff site.

you can find those original little grease pots full of plastilube that fit in the buttstock at gun shows, etc.

or can buy a large tub of lubriplate from brownells.

I was under the impression that the Garand bolt could only be disassembled with the multi-tool. Is that not true?

No, you just need a screwdriver to pry the extractor out. Then an empty shell casing or something similar to push the ejector down for reassembly.

Pretty sure you can mail order one from Northridge International.

I have tired doing that myself because I don't feel like shelling out money for the multi tool but have been unsuccessful in my efforts. Maybe someone should make a YOUTUBE vid for those of us having trouble.

I ended up using my gas plug wrench. It worked on the second attempt.

You can use the handle of the M10 cleaning rod to take the bolt apart but there is no need to do so unless something has broken in the bolt. In the butt stock should go the oiler, the M10 cleaning rod handle fits in one side of the oiler container and rod sections with tip go in the pouch, a grease pot and some patches to keep everything from rattling. After you put all of that in there don't take it out to clean the rifle with. Use a one piece rod and muzzle guide.

going to hijack since I also recently got an M1. How do you clean it, from the muzzle end right? It looks like I'll be scratching the barrel if I clean from the chamber side.. And what's a muzzle guide used for?

Several days later the bolt was rusted shut but I guess the fouling wasnt TOO bad.

The muzzle guide centers the cleaning rod in the bore and stops the tendency to pull the rod to one side and wear the muzzle. The accuracy in the rifle is effected by the condition of the muzzle and many M1s have damaged muzzles from using sectioned GI cleaning rods dragged at an angle. Also remember that the patches start at the chamber and out the muzzle not the other way around. Never shove a patch down the muzzle, eventually you will wear the crown unevenly. It doesn't seem possible but it can happen over a period of time.
