Looking for the last of the last Big5 surplus guns

    Happy Weekend Fellas.

I recall looking at a surplus gun that Big5 had for sale. It was the last of the surplus guns that they sold. This was probably 6-8 years ago. It was a heavy duty bolt action. Most of them that I looked at where in pretty good shape. It wasn't a Mosin and I don't think it was a Spanish gun.

I seem to recall that it was a model 44, maybe 43 and I think it was a 8mm..it wasn't a Chinese gun...

    Any ideas ?

I'd sure like to get one if you can set me straight...

    Thank you

M43 would be a Spanish Mauser in 8mm.

They are very solid rifles and, being post war, many are in excellent condition

They also sold a lot of 24/47 8mm Yugo Mausers. I bought one from Big5 and it came with a bayonet.

Like others have said, it was most likely a Yugoslavian Mauser, either an M24/47 or M48 model. They're honestly one of the last "cheap" Mauser's your still going to find, next to maybe the Turkish and Spanish Mauser's.

A lot of the Yugoslavian Mausers sold by Big 5 were in outstanding condition also. My 24/47 was in great condition.

I got a really nice (and cheap!) Yugo M48 with milled parts about 4 years ago from another Calgunner. He probably got it from Big 5.

Yeah, it certainly helps that the Yugoslavian's gave their Mauser's the Com-Bloc treatment of keeping them stored in cosmoline for close to 50 years before they got shipped to us to buy and shoot. Didn't buy mine at a Big 5 but I can certainly thank their outstanding value for making me become interested in Yugoslavian small arms.

I'm about 90% sure it was the M48. I guess I should have bought it from them when its was under $300.00 this was about 6-8 years ago....

                      Thanks again guys..
                      I'll see what I can find ..

I got a Brno 98/22 from big 5 a few years ago. 8x57 decent condition. I cleaned it up but did no restoration work on it. $89 at the time.

Got a couple Swiss K31s at Big5 about 15-16 years ago. Around $100 if I recall correctly.

So here's a crazy question: is Big-5 no longer selling Mosin/Yugo/Swiss K31/Spanish/Turkish surplus anymore solely because of supply has dried up, or what was left was only rusted-up rotten junk not even good for parts - or because they simply no longer want to do so?

As I recall, most everything came through CAI, so did a contract/deal cease or fall through, or is it that Big-5 just dropped the interest?

Anyone with an insured scoop? Empirearms/Dennis - got any ideas? (If you see this post).

Big5 also sold some junk. My dad bought isralili reproduction M1 carbine from them. After 2 mags it locked solid. Agoura Hills range gunsmith Jim used a rubber mallot to open it. he wont even look at it but say bring it bak for refund. My dad did got his money back. Missed Agoura Range to this day. 5 min from ny house.
