The 2A magazine works in both the 2A series and the #4 action.

The aftermarket ones I've tried in my Ishapore are I believe from ProMag - and they didn't work very well, had to tweak the heck out of the lips. The standard issue magazine works very well, but if 10 + 2 still equals 12 .......

Pretty sure I got the ProMags from Numrich and they had to be fitted to stay in place.

Really? This is good news if it is the case, as I would like to eventually convert a beat up old No. 5 to 7.62 NATO, although i thought a neat idea would be to see if it could be converted somehow to use FAL mags.

Sterling and Enfield 7.62 mags seem to be hard to find and are also expensive. 7.62 proofed bolt heads and clip guide adapters also seem to be very hard to come by, especially the latter. I'm not sure a sight was made for the No.4 and No. 5 type rifles marked for 7.62, although this may have been done with the L7s, although I would imagine they would be hard to find.

No special sight was used for the 7.62 rifle; the Brits felt that the yards and meters readings were close enough given the different trajectories of the bullets. The original 2A magazine fits fine, the only thing I had to do was remove a tiny bit of metal from the magazine body where the round feeds over the front into the chamber. The round was dragging on it as it went in. The #5 wasn't officially recommended for conversion because of the metal removed to make the action lighter than the #4 but I have seen pictures of converted #5s from the UK and they seem to have been satisfactory. Contact Brian Dick for conversion pieces. I got my proofed bolt heads and clip guides from contacts in the UK; try posting on the Culver Shooting Page forum/SMLE section with your needs, someone may volunteer the bits you need.

That is an excellent site. Most of what I have been trying to find out or at least look at can be found there. It never came up on searches, though. Thanks for that.

No. 5s were converted commercially using conversion kits; one guy there has one converted by Charnwood Ordnance. The No. 5 action is considered strong enough for 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester pressures. I had actually found that out from an authoritative book available online, but until now had no corroberating source. I personally prefer that route over modifying an Ishapore because the No. 5 is lighter than a 2A converted to that configuration, and it has aperture rear sights; among guns with SMLE actions, only the Australian No. 6 (like a No. 5 built on a SMLE action) was fitted with such sights, the receiver being manufactured to accomodate them in the second version.
