    1903 receiver marked "E.54181"

Anyone ever seen a 1903 receiver like this?

Looks like some sort of a commercial cast receiver.

Sarco had sold, in the past, 80% 1903 cast receivers. I wonder if someone completed one and stamped their own serial number.

It does not look like a Bannerman, Gibbs, FedOrd, NatOrd, Santa Fe receiver.

there's a crapton of what look like inspection stamps all over it, I would be surprised if that was made from 80%

Looks to me like a Military 1903 receiver that has the original receiver markings scrubbed off and then crudely hand stamped.

              Thanks, everyone, for the input.

The 1903 expert on the CMP forum believes it is a Remington 1903 receiver. Possibly a "lunch box" gun or stolen and crudely reserialized.

The weird thing is that the receiver ing does not seem to be overly out of round, like you would expect if the original roll stamping had been ground off.

In the first picture of your second post, the ring looks ground away at the "12 o'clock" position. Notice how the shadow line fades away just above the barrel index mark, the circumferential machine tool marks fade away, and the texture and color of the metal changes? Might be the picture angle, it also looks sloped a little to the rear. This feature at the front of the ring was to provide a shoulder for the hand guard ring.
The crapton of stamps look very much like Remington 03-A3.
Do you have a good A3 to measure the ring and compare? At this time I do not, only a US Springfield 1903 and a Santa Fe.

Yes good eye, that ring fades away. It looks like the top of the receiver has had material removed. There may not be a flat spot because they just removed it on a curve.

Perhaps it was a test or educational piece.

I think you are right, Ken.

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback. I did not bid on it.

It went for $250, plus shipping.
