    The year is 1944; the British have been in two world wars and are quickly realizing that mobility is essential to keeping troops alive and effective. Thus, the "Jungle Carbine" was born though it was known officially as the Lee-Enfield # 5 MK 1. The .303 British caliber rifle was a scaled-down version of the Enfield No. 4 Mk 1, losing nearly 4 inches of barrel and 2.5 pounds from the original rifle. The Jungle carbine was then fitted with a conical flash hider and a newly designed rubber buttpad. Keeping the same sighting system as the No. 4 Mk 1, it had a fixed front sight and an adjustable peep rear sight, and a flip-up ladder sight for the longer-range shots. The Enfield No. 5 kept the same detachable 10 round magazine. The No. 5 still operated like the original, so no extra training was needed for soldiers to be proficient with this carbine version. The No. 5 never saw action before WWII ended. However, it was issued to British paratroopers probably for an invasion into northern Japan that never happened. The Jungle Carbine saw its action in the colonial conflicts of Southeast Asia following WWII subsequently; that is also where it earned its unofficial nickname. Surplus rifles are becoming harder and harder to find these days and these Jungle Carbines are no different. Do not hesitate to add these to your surplus collection. NOTE: Due to age of these rifles some of these have appropriate replacement parts. For example some may have substitute MK4 bolt which is the same design but has a smaller bell.

    Historic British Enfield #4 Bolt Action Rifle in .303 British Caliber. They are in turn in condition which for Enfields means that that they are well used as most surplus Enfields are. That means dents, dings, scrapes, gouges, discoloration, and possible small cracks in the stocks. It will also mean bluing wear will vary and we have even seen some very minor surface rust on a few.  Having said that, don't let my overly honest description discourage you. We have been through this particular group of rifles and each one has been inspected thoroughly for condition. If it did not meet our condition standard for NRA surplus good then it was rejected and will not be sold under this SKU.       What are you doing for ammo? I haven't been able to find anything much under a dollar per round for .303 British.

          Wow $700 for a beater....that makes mine worth much more than I paid for it.

          I bought 2 cases of Greek .303 when CTD had it a few years back. So many were vowing never to do business with them. I broke the vow to buy that stuff and man I am glad I did. I still have several cans full of it, all on stripper clips.

              Bought it when it was cheap. I've sold a bunch off and still have about 400 rds of berdan SA and Portuguese ball and 200 of reloadable PP and WW. More than I'll probably shoot since recoil is getting to be a problem for me.

                      That's some vintage India ammunition. It looks like at least one box is dated 1935.

                              my shoulder hurts just looking at those! I recall the recoil being less than pleasant
