    M1 carbine mag pouch

Ok, kind of lame question, but I can't seem to find an answer. Is the mag pouch on the stock of an M1 carbine supposed to slde freely? Mine looks cool and all, but when shooting it constantly slides foreward. Seems like a pain to deal with (especially when you are being shot at).

Am I missing something on securing this?

    Yes, and here is why.

That pouch was not designed to go there.

You'll notice a metal snap on the back. That pouch was originally meant to clip into a belt as a part of a rig. Soldiers found it quite convenient to have accessible magazines on the stock and so happens this pouch fit there and the idea was born.

me neither, I figured this out while I was reenacting and I found it handy to take pouches off my belt and put them on my stock

older members cited the source from two major M1 carbine books by Reisch and Canfield that support this

You may want to apply a band-aid to the snap on the pouch before sliding it on your wood stock. The snap can leave some nasty dents on your stock.

Spiggy is correct -- It was/is a good way for a non-grunt to keep weapon and a small supply of ammo together -- drop your wrench and grab your carbine --

My RockOla has a pouch that had the snap cut out. I don't notice it sliding around much, especially when it has magazines in it.
