Military Silhouette Match tomorrow 18 September

    Cross posted to other categories:
This is a fun match. Although the match winner will only comes from the vintage shooters, this match is not limited to just vintage rifles as you can shoot your modern AR platforms as well as other bolt guns just no FMJ, AP and magnums.

Sign up starts at 07:00 and match starts at 08:00 at range #6 Sac Valley Shooting Center so don't be late.

For those that didn't make it you missed a fun match. Weather was great and we were done before noon. There was some good shooting from both the scoped shooters and especially the iron sight as issued rifles.

If you didn't make it this time there will be a semiautomatic/gas gun match next Saturday at the same time and place so bring out your M1 Garand, AG42B Ljungman, M1A, AR. AK and SKS and have fun.

Does anyone get the rams to fall over with x39 rounds?

Rams are tough to knock over if you hit them in the center as they weigh about 50 lbs. Saturday I hit 9 rams but #8 I hit dead center and it didn't fall even with a 175 grain 30-06 loaded to the max. So if you are asking if a 7.62x39 (I assume that's what you are referring to when you say X39), will probably ring a few rams that's if you hit it as at 500m a 7.62x39 is probably already going slow and is becoming unstable therefore loses its accuracy.

However, you can certainly give it a try and will have fun doing it regardless of your score. Next match is this Saturday. Be there!

No FMJ, AP and magnums. You will have to confirm on the "bimetal open tip" so call the range to make sure.

It's rare that anyone even tries, although 6mmintl had an odd devotion to that round and used rifles in that chambering several times. As I recall he used a Yugo Mauser with a barrel as big around as my forearm chambered in 7.62 x 39 and did pretty well until he got to the rams. Maybe knocked over 1 or 2.

IIRC, he used a scoped SKS once in the semi auto match with similar results on the rams.

I did find an old semi auto match results sheet from 2015 where someone using an AR chambered in 7.62x39 knocked over 4 rams though. However, as a nod to the .223 shooters, rams are soft set for the semi auto match, so ringers are uncommon during that match.

It was/is a Steyr mfg M98 with a Krieger 10" twist .308 heavy contour, chambered in 7.62X39 Lapua. Not your usual run of the mill CIP AK chamber.

I barreled it with a take-off barrel that Jack Davis had originally fit to Marty Peacocks' across the course M70. Did not know the round count but it sure shot good with Sierra 135 MK's. As mentioned before, it was marginal on rams.

Frank did the bolt face and ejector work.
