Based on the photos I would guess a refinish was done in conjunction with rechambering.

Does this look like a rebarrel or rechambering?

I'd be concerned about the brass pins, and the caliber stamp looks odd to me. I'd probably want a Cody letter on that one to see how it left the factory, before spending big on it.Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

It wasn't, it was a Winchester chamber stamp and factory proof stamp. I looked hard, and didn't see any signs of a re-blue. The muzzle crown was still in the white too, Winchester didn't blue the crown. The stocks have been rubbed out with Linseed oil, probably after the wrist repair.
I agree with BBM, I would want to see a letter, and the factory date stamp on the barrel bottom. Half Octagon/Half magazine in 38/55 is a desirable 94.
From the sellers condition description, sounds like it was broken a long time ago, and got set aside, and someone finally wanted to use it bad enough, they fixed the stock. Wouldn't ship to Calif anyhow.Comment
