Atlantic just launched a batch of K98s for $989. Their video contrasts with Classic by telling us clearly these are mix-masters and quality varies from Fair to VG. The ones they show have no finish and a fair bit of "patina." No ability to select anything or special requests - a pure "lottery ticket" as the spokesperson says. They show a few BNZ 43's and also some that look like russian capture with X on the receiver. Seems like a very high-risk lottery ticket for the high price buy I give them credit for an honest and accurate description. I do not recall if they honor CA FFL03 and COE at this time.

Do you think they're part of the African surplus influx that we're seeing a lot of?

It is hard to believe that the price has gone so high on these.Comment

Atlantic usually has very good prices. Not so in this instance.Comment

"very good" is of course relative. And it seems in this case many people disagreed as they're already tagged sold out. I wonder how many they actually had? From the pictures it was a real luck of the draw, some looked really rough. A couple of them I'd be happy with at that price, others not so much. I am generally in the market for a K98, but I would have passed on these. I'll keep trying my luck at the gunbroker ones till I see just what I want at a price I like. It may be my next purchase, though I'm still missing a Berthier in my WWI stuff. Decisions, decisions.Comment

I remember when I bought some mint K98Ks for 1100 to 1300 apiece, my friends said I was robbed.
Robbed now or later, they go up in value - or the dollar goes down, regardless - they are fun to have.Comment

The interesting one on the pictures is a CE41 that has the Russian X on it. However it seems that it was either not refinished, or the finish has worn off again. The USSR supplied many weapons to Ethiopia years back when they had a socialist government. This may be where these guns came from. Don't know if all of the guns have the X or not. If they are Russian reworks you should get a good to very good bore. Some of the other Mausers from Albania and Romania had sewer bores that were mostly look at guns and not shooter guns.Comment

I just looked on Gun Broker and yes the German k98's have gone through the roof. I shouldn't have sold so many off years back. The ammo too, J&G in AZ is selling a box of 15 rds. for a little less than $15. I bought thousands of rounds back in 2003 for 7.4c a round if you bought in case lots! Yup, a little over a dollar a box for that ammo that now costs so much more and is 20 years older to boot!!!!Comment

WOW, that is a scary sticker price. Guess Yugo captures are the best next option for a K98, although those have gone up quite a bit too."Let him that is without stone among you cast the first thing he can lay his hands on." -Robert FrostComment

I love anything in 8mm Mauser and K98's are great rifles. If someone is in the market for a K98 with a budget of $1k, I'd recommend looking for one via private party or any of the various FS/FT boards. There are occasionally some gems on the auction sites as well.
In any case, there is peace of mind in seeing actual photos and asking pointed questions before buying one. Mine are mostly just shooters, but I never regretted buying any of them.Comment

No likee the new prices ! Got mine years ago. And classic has to me been the one who really got the outragous $$ prices going UPPP. Aside from Mausers, have you seen their prices for the ( junk in my not so humble point of view ) 1891 Italian 6.5 carbines ?
