    Mauser 8x57 mm riffles

I don't know why but lately I been attracted to 8mm mauser. I already have a k98 converted to 30-06 and Yugo m24/47. Not to mention that I reload for 8mm Mauser so ammo is cheap to me. Now I do come from 7.62x54r heritage but I'm hooked on a 8x57 for some reasons. Is this a good deal considering that my local FFL will rape me about $100 plus my certificate is expired

Bit overpriced in my opinion but then again I'd say Yugo's are the best proverbial brand for the buck with regards to 98k's; a majority of them got brand new barrels during the refurbishment process in the 40's, and then after being crated up, it means the barrels are still rather new (ie only used for possibly 30 years instead of 90).

I would look elsewhere. Maybe start with a Russian capture K98k?

About eight years ago I sold an 8MM BRNO Mauser on this forum. It was a full stock carbine with a butter knife bolt, double set triggers, sling swivel through the fore end midway, and a beautifully checkered blond wood colored stock. Not a military conversion. Sadly, it had a bad crack in the already very thin wrist. I have a picture of it around here somewhere. I think I still have ammo for it.

At that price range, an RC capture would be a much better option. Not all RC’s are thrashed and peered out. Everything is costing more these days, but I have seen some decent RC’s on GB recently in the $700 -$800 range.

Pig in a poke surplus buys are also a mixed bag. You could get something mint or it could be junk due to the subjectivity in grading their condition. Nowadays I like to see exactly what I’m buying.

The 8mm cartridge was developed 100 years ago. I don't see how 8mm can be relevant anymore.

Just ask C. Smith about relevancy.

So I guess 30-06 must be washed up too eh?

You can still get a Portuguese Vaquero in 8mm Mauser for less than $500. Most of them are great shooters.

Yes, excuse the auto correct. The 1904/39 Portuguese Vergueiro. Recoil is a bit harsh, but very accurate rifle.

No one writes any competition stories or mentions the prior lethality days of the 30.06 cartridge on the inner-web.
Therefore, High Power Rifle shooters don't know they can win using an obsolete cartridge.

Plus, CA deer and wild hogs haven't been keeping up on their Guns & Ammo reading assignments and are
no longer convinced they are supposed to die immediately after getting blasted with 30 cal at 2,700fps.
