    PU Sniper project - ugh...

A little over a month ago I ordered one of Samco's scopeless Mosin Nagant 91/30 snipers (these were original PUs that were imported without scopes). UPS dropped it off out of the blue, Samco hadn't sent me any correspondence since my order confirmation, so I was happy to see that it finally arrived.

The rifle is caked in cosmo, which I was expecting, but the stock is dented and gouged. None of the numbers match (is that normal for snipers?), and it's missing the little metal piece that attaches to the upper handguard directly behind the front sight.

Also the scope I planned to mount was the replica PU scope from Kalinka optics, which claims it has everything needed to mount the scope. The problem is that the spacing between the holes of the mount doesn't match the spacing between the rifle's mounting holes, the screws that are included with Kalinka's mount are too small for the rifle, and, most bizarrely, the included retaining screws are differently sized than the threaded holes on the mount.

What do you guys think? Should I just get a properly sized mount from accumounts ($70) and be done with it? On the plus side the bore is bright and passes the bullet test very well, and the trigger seems good even full of cosmo (by the way, is it normal to be able to push the trigger ~3/8 inches forwards with the bolt closed? My M44's trigger doesn't do this).

    If it was the
    Mosin-Nagant M91/30 Bent Bolt
    Very Good Condition
    $279.95

I would expect the wood to be almost pristine, matching #'s, and 100% complete. Give them a call!

That's what I was expecting, especially since I spent the extra $20 for 'special select'. I'm just wondering if the non-matching numbers are characteristic of snipers (I don't want to sound like an idiot when I call them).

Call and ask. You were not expecting a mismatched rifle with dings and gouges in it with a missing part.

Special select to most everyone means 95-100% original.

You might need to work on it. Check surplusrifle.com for the article on accurizing a mosin

I bought my Yugo mosin sniper from Samco nearly 2 years ago (don't remember which grade it was). The rifle I received had matching serial no. on metal parts, a sweet trigger, excellent bore, and nice stock. Could it be that Samco is finally down to the "bottom of the barrel"? Regardless, I would contact them to ask for an exchange or money back. The rifle you described certainly is not "special select" grade.

Sounds like you need to send that junk back on their dime.

Remember that "Very Good" condition is at about the middle of the milsurp rifle grading system.
