    .30 carbine question?

Did Smith & Wesson make a version of one? The cobwebs in the old grey matter are crossfireing thinking they didn't.

The reason I'm asking is and auction in Reno. SMITH & WESSON U.S. CARBINE .30 CAL RIFLE

Yep I've seen plenty of Smith Corona's but I don't think I've even heard of a Smith & Wesson.

Ransom as far as I can tell. Just looks like they want an extra 100.00 bucks on top of the sale and fee prices.

            Smith Corona made the 1903A3.

AFAIK S&W never made any M1 Carbine rifles and I have never seen them listed as a WWII producer of the carbine.

They did chamber a revolver in .30 carbine but it was never mass produced.

List of M1 carbine WWII manufacturing companies:

Winchester made 828,059, followed by Underwood Elliott-Fisher at 545,616, Saginaw Steering Gear 517,212, IBM at 346,500, Standard Products at 247,000, Rock-Ola (yes, the juke box maker), with 228,500, Quality Hardware at 359,666, National Postal Meter at 413,017 and Irwin-Pedersen made a few thousand but had trouble.May 14, 2020

BTW notice no pictures of the barrel end flaming bomb or manufacture. Those receiver holes are ugly.

No WWII smith and wesson M1 carbine, that S/N falls within Underwood contract.

Seller confused who made the carbine, with that rear sight over hanging the receiver, seller probably saw a few letters and decided on a name that was familiar.

Smith & Wesson did produce a "light rifle" in 1940 however it was a 9mm, not 30 Carbine. The timing and that all sorts of makers were looking at a military contract may add some confusion.

From the looks of the M1 pictured it appears someone did a bit of D&T and hogged out the stock for a side mount.

Too bad someone drilled holes in the side of the receiver.

More than 30 years ago I was shooting at the local range and even older gentleman was shooting a scoped carbine. Had to go over and talk about it. He was a veteran, carried a M1 carbine either Korea or Vietnam, he always wanted one, and he got one. He put a scope on it, so he could see what he was doing.

I looked at it, and it had been before drilling an tapping, an all original and matching Rock Ola!. Still, to the owner, its value was that he could shoot it, and he was. So, good for him.

I hope the collectors cry at my estate sale, for I robbed them of money by shooting the weapons I love.

Saginaw Steering Gear? If as one poster said thy just saw the first letter "S" they might has assumed "Smith". There were two Saginaws. There was Saginaw Gear and Saginaw ' Gear'(called Saginaw Prime). S'G' came when Saginaw took over the Irwin Pederson contract.
The other possibility is Standard Products.

I have no problem with anyone shooting their guns. Notice that I only stated that it was too bad that the holes were drilled in it. Actually when I see old military arms that are irretrievably modified, in my mind, that just makes my un screwed with stuff worth a little bit more.
