I had an M1 that the rear sight bottomed out before it zero'd at 100 yds. I took the aperture out of the rear sight and ground down the bottom side that contacted the reciever a bit and that was all that was needed. some M1s need multiple clicks of elevation to get on the black and a few need to bottom out the sight.

Guys this is all excellent advice. I'm loathe to muck around with the Rear sight as I know not much about these beast and this garand is nice enough that I dont' wnat to ,muck it up. If I go for center hold this means that with thsi garand I'll be even higher from where I need to be to zero it. Having siad that I will need to re zero ALL of my rifles, whihc means I'll ave to go to the range loads of times - what an excellent thought. Thanks to all who chipped in here with advice

PS I just spoke with Orion7 who are well thought of in the garand world and they are back ordered on front sight parts for 3 months. They recommended the grinding down of the underside of the rear aperture as the way to go.
Will try it and report back.Comment

One thing that hasn't been mentioned.. mabe the front sight blade has been filed down alread.. take the front sight off and measure from top of blade to bottom the the sight.. factory should be .725"'Just Don't Point, Squint, and Laugh! '
