Is the barrel marked to use short, long, long rifle? Some vintage guns were set up to shoot shorts only.
Some people like semi auto guns that shoot 22shorts. They are a little quieter and don't arouse the neighborhood.
A new recoil spring should solve the problem for shooting LR rounds but shorts will no longer cycle.
Have fun with that nice rifle

Dan, that's what was unique about the 550, the floating chamber insert allowed it to cycle all 3 in a tube fed automatic, even mixed randomly in the magazine.
      Made Sept. of 1954.
There's a mainspring, and an action spring, and half dozen little springs. There's all kinds of "jams", Need to know "exactly" how it jams.
Does it feed the first round?
When a round is fired, does it eject, and when it does, what happens next?
Does the round hit the bottom of the chamber, or the top?
Or does it kick more than one round up to be chambered?
Instead of replacing every spring, let's try and diagnose what the cause of the problem is, and fix that.

I'm curious about the lifter Springs?
You're on the right track, sounds like not enough lift for the LR, but just enough for shorts. Double check the cartridge stop detent that nothing hangs up there as well.

Mine used to jam. I took it apart and cleaned it. One of the hardest rifles I ever had to put back together. Once it was clean it worked fine.

Thanks Trapp, now I know my generic answer was only the beginning.
That's why I like Calguns. I can always learn something new.

There were a lot of semi auto .22's that were either chambered in Short only, or LR only, with the same model number, so the confusion is understandable. That's my usual state every morning, until coffee anyhow.
Something that's always puzzled me, is why Rem never used that system in any other models, and neither did anyone else. My best guess is, it was another patent/marketing screw up, like they did to kill the 5mm Rem rimfire.

Numrich has all the parts and springs, prices are reasonable.
Shop OEM Remington parts for rifles, shotguns, and pistols. Barrels, triggers, bolts, stocks, extractors, and firing pins available now.
