    CMP Shipping Krags Again!!!

I forgot to mention this earlier but just an "FYI"; CMP said that they will ship 30-40 Krag rifles to customers again.

I ordered two more with my last order, so we'll see how it goes...

For those of you who are interested, they're great rifles! I love the one I have already and I can't wait to see how these turn out.

they only have the "junk" grades though, right?

I like Krags, I really do. But theres no way I'm sinking $500 for a crap shoot.

The one I ordered was a shooter and toolman got a good one too. Mine had excellent rifling and the stock still had a visible cartouche. The only noticeable flaw was a broken stacking swivel, which I was able to find on eBay, a few weeks ago for $30 (which included the front band, if anyone needs one). I was shooting 2" groups at 50 yards with iron sights and factory ammo on mine (and I have a witness ). I was astonished by this because Krags were not notoriously accurate but mine does very well...

I think it you "go cheap" and get the ones that they offer for $350, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. I got one of the higher grade ones for $450 and have never been more pleased with a firearms purchase.

I ordered an extra one with this most recent order and I might be able to be talked out of the extra one, once it arrives. I meant for it to be an investment but we'll see.

Krags are notoriously accurate, off the bench I can consistently shoot 2" groups with the the 1896 iron sights at 100yds, and National Guard troops with Krags consistently out shot the Regular Army and Marines with 1903 Springfields in matches prior to the Krag being retired.

            How do you order?

I do not see this at CMP except junk by walk in store.

            How does one order one?

            Anyone get one yet?

I called and talked to Orest but I really don't even think that's necessary. It appears as if they have taken down that disclaimer that says "in store sales only". I don't see that on the website anymore.

...and for the record; I maintain a little resentment towards the classification of those rifles as "junk" from the CMP. It just not true. Mine shoots great and looks really nice for a 110 year old rifle. I was very pleased with mine.

As far as I know, you would just submit the order like you would for any other CMP rifle. Just fill out the forms and send them off...

I have one that I got about 8 months ago and toolman9000 got one before me. Both of ours were shooters with tight bores. As I said previously, the only issue I had with mine was a broken stacking swivel but I found one on ebay a few weeks ago and it has been replaced...

I appreciate the heads up on this.

As for junk, that is the CMP description. What you say you received is not what they say they are selling hence my reluctance.

If I could buy what you have then it would be a deal. If I paid that much for what CMP is describing I would have a very expensive coat rack.

Has anyone received one of these recently?

Does anyone know if CMP received something different than the ones they essentially say are junk.

This grade Krag is basically complete, but may be missing firing pin, stacking swivels, some screws or other small parts. Metal finish is worn. Stock and barrel may have been shortened to carbine length. Wood will have dings, dents and gouges, but stock will be sound with no cracks. Barrel may be tack-welded to receiver, but barrel is not plugged. Barrel is shot out and in the black. Rifle may or may not headspace and is considered unsafe to fire. Only 343 in stock. All sales are final.
$450 for one of those junk rifles is just to much.

Shoot, I see over a $1,000 in repairs for a rifle that can be had in nice shooter grade for $600-$700 with everyong putting their money into black rifles these days.

The rifle you describe as receiving is not the same one that CMP says they are selling.

CMP described the Krags that same way last time they sold them. The CMP tends to describe the worst of the worst of the worst in order to cover their bases so they don't get complaints. The vast majority of the time the rifles are much better than what they list.

I ordered an "MKRAGX" rifle, so the answer is yes, they are the very same rifles that CMP is currently offering.

You're entitled to your opinion, so feel free to pass up buying one if you so choose. However, at least two Calguns members have obtained excellent shooting Krags from CMP and if you look at what unaltered Krags typically go for I think you'll see that these are a good deal. Your speculation that you will have to dump a bunch of money into this rifle was not accurate in my case either. I cleaned the rifle and shot it... That's it. I didn't have to fork out the $1000 that you mentioned that you would have to spend to get it ready to shoot.

For the record, CMP also sells 1903 Springfields and 1917 Enfields that are considered "unsafe to fire" and they don't classify them as "junk". They don't classify M1 Garand barreled receivers as "junk" and it says in their description: "These may or may not be able to be built into safe, shootable rifles. THESE ARE SOLD AS-IS."

                      Does that make them "junk"?

Not hardly. Thousands of people have bought those receivers and built great running M1s. I don't know why Orest put that in the Krag's description but I can speculate that he sold some of the MKRAGY rifles to someone who didn't like what they got, despite the fact that they clearly warn you in the description. If I can speculate on Orest's motivation, I would guess that he got sick of the whining and decided to be as blunt as he possibly could about it.

I just wanted to let you guys know that they were available. As I've said before, I've been very happy with my Krag and I'm hoping that a few more of you guys will have similar results.

I believe Orest indicated that many people were complaining about the condition of the Krags they received. Not NIB etc... It was easier to label them as junk to ward off complaints and the cost of returns.

A college buddy who lived 2 hours away from the CMP North Store went by last week to pick up a Garand. He also checked the Krags and reported that they were in poor condition. However, YMMV. I am just glad I pick up my Krag a couple of years ago for $350. Great shooter
