Amazing, first gun I ever shot was a chrome Mk III rental at On Target. I've wanted one ever since, but they've somehow alluded me.

Nice find OP, was this a Calguns marketplace pick up?

That’s a nice one. Have you checked to see when it was made?

I have a couple of earlier Standard Automatics. One from 1972 (top) and the other from ’75. The later one was used by a NRA pistol instructor to teach classes and even though it probably has a half a million rounds through it, it still functions perfectly.

PS: You need to figure out a way to reduce the size of those pictures, even on my home computer they are so large that they are hard to view. On my Iphone they are impossible to see.

Yeah I have an earlier one with the hard red wooden felt-lined box and the Ruger bird on the front. Never seen another one wih that type of case.
Also have another Standard and a 22/45
          Great pistols.

Incredible, that's a testament to the quality firearms Bill Ruger designed and built.

It all started when he repurposed the dies for stamping the grip on his handdrill.

You're kidding...the Standard evolved from a hand drill?? Didn't even know that Ruger was involved in tool manufacture.

I never knew of this backstory. Calguns, you never cease to amaze with the knowledge you bestow.

He wasn't having any luck getting backing for a gun business. He had designed some military weapons with no takers. He went into the tool biz to keep the doors open. He made the drills from 46-48. The Standard Auto came out in 49 and they never looked back.

Would be funny to have one of those drills in the safe right next to the matching pistol.
