Pietta 1858 nipple won't thread in

Combed the interwebz looking for a solution, only find stuck nipple info...

    So I've shot my 44 twice, this time some nipples won't thread back in;
5 out of 6 went in, one gets tight before nipple is flush. Used a dab of
anti-seize each time, no threads appear stripped. Inner threads on the
cylinder don't appear stripped either. 1st World black powder problems!

Tossed the Traditions nipple wrench after 2 uses, it crumpled like a
beer can. Bought an RMC Ox-Yoke wrench that is much sturdier.

Lame post or is this a common issue? Thanks.

The nipple on the left appears to be at a different angle than the one that you circled.

Did you try the problem nipple in another spot on the cylinder?
Did you try a different nipple in the problem threads?

My bet is it is cross threaded, or buggerd up threads.

    Take care

      I forgot.

Are the male and female threads clean of any thing that bind it up?

I'll try swapping nipples. The cylinders were thoroughly cleaned.

        Thanks

Best way to clean cylinders is boil them in water I used a old metal coffee can. Word of caution oil soon after the boil they can rust fast.

sorry for how this sounds but you do know how to catch the thread, right? I get lazy and just go for it too- sometimes that doesn't work and the nipple won't seat.

invariably, taking the time to properly catch the thread fixes it.

Are you removing the nipples every time you Clean the gun? If you are that is not necessary. You only need to remove them when they are damaged to be replaced. Try carefully swapping the nipple to other chambers till it fits.

^^^ as long as you're not using water you can get away with that.

it's one of those things people don't do from sloth that require more work in the end.

swap with a different one... also when screwing them in always start by turning them out until you feel the threads drop in, which is actually good advice for any screw

                        Why not chase the threads?

Probably some oddball fine metric thread.

IIRC the Piettas use a 6-0.75 thread, it's not exactly unobtanium https://www.amazon.com/Drill-America...8246885&sr=8-3

That being said, it seems like it would be weird for one of the chambers to no longer thread a nipple unless either the nipple was damaged or the threads in the chamber end were dirty/rusted/damaged. Either way, a tap and die ought to fix the problem IMO.

Hell if I know, I do computer stuff; mechanical stuff is just a hobby I do poorly.
