Century Arms has Chinese trash can Mausers for $130...

The ultimate project gun or belongs in a dumpster?

Knowing Classic, they're probably graded as Very Good/Excellent.

I just finished reading a book about the Gewehr 88 and it says that these rifles were made with varying degrees of quality depending on which warlord was controlling the manufactory at the time, there were several factories and this period in Chinese history was chaotic at best.

8MM with a .318 bore ammo is available, but not easy to find. I'd say that if they aren't completely rusted out they probably aren't going to blow up, but I'm not too sure about shooting them...maybe with some powder puff handloads.

Century in the nineties and early 2000's had super great deals on surplus. Both guns and ammo flowed like crazy. Now they want to sell you their left over junk for ridiculous prices. I used to buy m44's w/ same description for 18.97. Many were all there, and some were literally new with maybe a screw missing. Ammo was 8-12c a round for many surplus calibers including 5.56, 8mm, 54R, and even 9mm and 380 at times. Those days are now sadly gone, and don't think we will ever see them again. Having had many Chinese Mausers just about positive these have sewer bores. U can drop a bullet in them and it will come out the other side. These guns were rode hard and put away wet!

Should be gtg as an antique for CA right? For a non-ffl? Or does the change in receiving stuff that happened a few years ago also affect antiques?

During that time I had a great Century sales guy...how about Imbel FAL paratrooper kits from South America. They were issued but never fired. $149 and all you needed was a receiver. Dealer's Warehouse in Modesto had new Imbel gear logo receivers for $179, iirc. I bought more than a few.

You probably could shoot cast boolits out of it at 1500 fps and be fine.

All of the rifles pictured on their site are the 1904+ updated models made in China (no barrel shroud being the quick way to tell). None of them are antiques, but they are all C&R

The G88 rifle is not a Mauser. It's a Commission rifle made by several firms. I got a nice shootable 1890 Leowe for $250 last year. Those look like pure junk.

I used to see Mosins in much better shape for that for $69. Even when they went up to $99, they were generally Ishevsk/Tula arsenal refurbs and thus were in surprisingly good shape for such older milsurp rifles. These Chinese Mausers, though, look like they've been sitting outside for years. Maybe a gunsmith learning project, like at the colleges, but that's about it.

I almost want to buy a couple of the $30 and $50 pre-1898 receivers to throw in a box for retirement projects some day. I know little about Mausers, worth doing as a conversation piece/potential future project?

That’s something I’d probably buy in person, but not via mail. I still would love a shooter grade antique small ring just for an excuse to have another vintage caliber around.
